On Tuesday, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety held its annual Public Safety Special Awards ceremony during the City Council meeting. This event honors and recognizes members of the Sunnyvale community, Public Safety officers, and DPS professional staff for their service, dedication, and commitment to our community.

Staff award recipients were nominated by their peers for demonstrating exceptional performance that went above and beyond the call of duty in serving Sunnyvale. Community members and volunteers were nominated by DPS staff for their bravery, courage, and outstanding service to those in need.

We are proud to celebrate their dedication and contributions to our community. Congratulations to all of this year’s recipients, and thank you for your service!

Yesterday evening, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety received a call from a resident reporting that smoke was filling his home and that he and his wife were unable to evacuate because of mobility issues. Patrol officers responded immediately and arrived before fire personnel. After learning from neighbors that the elderly couple was believed to still be inside, officers forced entry into the residence.

The home was filled with smoke, and Public Safety Officers quickly began searching for the couple, locating the residents on the second floor. One resident relied on an oxygen tank, and the other used a wheelchair. Both were safely carried out of the home.

The first-floor kitchen and adjacent walls sustained fire and smoke damage. Fire personnel removed portions of the ceiling and walls to fully extinguish the fire and make sure it had not spread. The fire was successfully extinguished, and the scene was brought under control. It was determined to be accidental and the result of a cooking-related incident.

We are grateful that both residents were unharmed and did not require transportation to the hospital. The quick efforts of responding Patrol Officers were instrumental in ensuring a successful rescue. This incident highlights the unique training of our Public Safety Officers and the strength of a coordinated emergency response the Department of Public Safety is proud of.

Great work by everyone involved, especially to the Patrol Officers who did not hesitate to perform their job at the highest level.

Last Friday, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Community Crimes Unit (CCU) assisted Patrol Public Safety Officers responding to a domestic violence incident.

The suspect had assaulted his ex-girlfriend and fled from the residence after stealing her cell phone to prevent her from calling 9-1-1. He was also wanted for a parole violation and was considered armed and dangerous. CCU spent several hours tracking down the suspect, ultimately locating him in San Jose.

CCU, Patrol Officers, and the San Jose Police Department arrested the suspect in San Jose without incident and booked him into jail.

We thank our law enforcement partner, the San Jose Police Department, as well as teams across the Department of Public Safety for their collaborative efforts. Successes like these are only possible through teamwork, perseverance, and a dedication to keeping our community safe. Great work!

We are committed to responding to and investigating domestic violence cases, making sure all community members receive the support, resources, and assistance they deserve.

Last Friday, the Department of Public Safety had the honor of participating in the 2026 Law Enforcement Torch Run, carrying the flag and the Flame of Hope through the City and handing it off to the Santa Clara Police Department.

We are proud to support this organization and its athletes. The Torch Run encompasses a number of events and fundraising initiatives throughout the year, including Tip-A-Cop and Badges with Buckets, all with the goal of raising money and awareness for the Special Olympics.

Thank you to everyone who ran and came out to cheer us on!

Earlier today, while attempting to park his car, an elderly man drove his Honda Accord through the front of the Safeway on S Bernardo Ave, drove about 70 feet, and stopped at the floral department.

Thankfully, injuries were minor, with only one customer inside suffering from a few cuts and bruises. They were transported to the hospital for further care. Both the driver and the passenger were not injured.

Please remember to operate motor vehicles responsibly and remain alert at all times. Safe driving protects not only you, but everyone else on the road, or in this case, the floral department of Safeway.

We are grateful no one was seriously injured.

Today, in honor of National Police Week, we honor and remember our fallen officers for their sacrifices and commitment to the City of Sunnyvale.

This afternoon, we joined the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office at their annual Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony, along with agencies from across the county, paying tribute to their courage and sacrifice.

The names of the five Public Safety Officers who lost their lives in the line of duty were read aloud, with the promise that their legacy would live on. Please join us in honoring Officer Manuel Lopez Jr., Officer Edward J. Roth, Officer Charles P. Fraker, Officer Charles W. Morris, and Officer Gary L. Larson.

We are thankful for the men and women who put their lives at risk to protect and serve their community, wearing the badge with integrity and courage.
