Managing THMs is a constant challenge for utilities, especially as water quality conditions can change throughout the day. The real issue is often a lack of visibility because most utilities rely on periodic sampling and delayed lab results, making it difficult to respond before compliance is impacted. The City of Benicia Water Treatment Plant in California took a different approach by implementing real-time THM monitoring with the AMS THM-100™ online analyzer. With continuous measurement of THM levels and formation potential, operators gained the insight needed to optimize treatment, reduce costs, and ensure regulatory compliance while delivering consistently high-quality water. At the International Tin Conference 2026 in Seville, Spain, on May 21, Rick Bacon will present “The Application of Tin in Advanced Water Treatment Processes and Corrosion Control” during the 11:40 am session.
By generating a powerful and non-toxic stannous reagent onsite and on-demand, AMS’s proprietary SafeGuard™ H2O system brings the application of tin in water treatment to several high value-added applications to protect asset performance, human health, and the environment. With this innovation, the US markets for hexavalent chromium removal from drinking water and corrosion control in cooling towers represent a significant opportunity from the broader tin industry, with an estimated tin consumption of greater than 5,500 metric tons.

Nitrate contamination remains a growing challenge for drinking water systems. Traditional solutions like reverse osmosis and ion exchange can remove nitrates, but often at the expense of high energy use and difficult-to-manage waste streams. Biological denitrification offers a sustainable and effective alternative. By converting nitrate into harmless nitrogen gas, systems like BIOBOX® Nitrate provide efficient removal without brine waste, while maintaining low turbidity, minimal water loss, and reliable performance through automated monitoring.

Arizona, Jeff Bower, a registered engineer with the Town of Gilbert’s Public Works Department, will present “Biological Denitrification System Evaluated for Groundwater Nitrate Removal in Gilbert” (Track WT11, April 29 from 10:00–10:30 am). Jeff's session will highlight real-world insights into tackling nitrate contamination across the town’s groundwater wells. As part of this work, the Town conducted an evaluation of the BIOBOX® Nitrate system at Well #22, where nitrate levels reached as high as 26 ppm. He will explain how the fully automated biological denitrification solution reduced nitrate to non-detectable levels, offering a more sustainable alternative to traditional, energy-intensive methods. It is another example of how AMS continues to be the “Swiss Army Knife” of water treatment, delivering versatile, innovative solutions that are transforming the way we treat water.
