MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY IN SUNBURY

Thank you to the local veterans at the American Legion and VFW for hosting yesterday's event near the Sunbury Square to remember the fallen heroes who died fighting for our freedom. It was a solemn reminder of the reason for the holiday.

CLERK OF COUNCIL AND COMMUNITY AFFAIRS SPECIALIST

The City of Sunbury is seeking a qualified, detail-oriented, and service-driven individual to serve as Clerk of Council and Community Affairs Specialist. This full-time position serves as the official record-keeper for City Council and ensures the integrity, transparency, and compliance of the legislative process (about two-thirds of job). In addition, this role supports the City’s communication, outreach, and public engagement efforts (about one-third of job).

Evening and occasional weekend availability is required of this at-will position. A more detailed job description is available on the City of Sunbury’s website at www.sunburyohio.org.

Starting wage for this position is expected to be between $25.00 to $27.00 per hour. This position also includes a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, paid leave, and retirement benefits.

THANK YOU BIG WALNUT MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS!

It has been a busy day throughout Sunbury with Big Walnut Middle School students completing a day of service.

Some of the projects completed include: (1) helping the mayor cut a ribbon at a new public parking lot near the Square, (2) spreading mulch around the Square, city cemetery, and municipal building, (3) cleaning windows at the Myers Inn, and (4) installing new math problems along the GRE Math Trail.

NATIONAL POLICE WEEK IN SUNBURY

Deputy Police Chief Shawn Wade and the Sunbury City Council joined Mayor Joe St. John in kicking off the community's Light Ohio Blue Campaign and announcing an upcoming week of recognition for our law enforcement officers.

Last night's city council meeting included a proclamation from Mayor St. John declaring the week of May 10-16 as National Police Week in Sunbury and encouraging residents to salute the service of law enforcement officers.

Thank you to the men and women who help to keep our families and neighborhoods safe every day of the year!

FULL TEXT OF PROCLAMATION

PROCLAMATION DECLARING MAY 10-16, 2026
NATIONAL POLICE WEEK IN THE CITY OF SUNBURY

WHEREAS, there are more than 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Sunbury Police Department;

WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1786, there are currently more than 24,000 law enforcement officers in the United States who have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty.

WHEREAS, the names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC;

WHEREAS, 363 new names of fallen heroes are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial this spring, including 109 officers killed in 2025 and 254 officers killed in previous years;

WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty will be honored during the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s 37th Candlelight Vigil, on the evening of May 13, 2026;

WHEREAS, the Candlelight Vigil is part of National Police Week, which will be observed this year during the week of May 10-16;

WHEREAS, May 15 is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of all fallen officers and their families and U.S. flags should be flown at half-staff;

WHEREAS, The Light Ohio Blue Campaign will kick off on May 6 and include a caravan that will travel through Sunbury to honor the families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I Mayor Joe. St. John do herby proclaim the week of May 10-16, 2026, as National Police Week in the City of Sunbury and encourage residents to publicly salute the service of law enforcement officers in our community and in communities across the nation.

Come out to support this incredible event and show your support for the fallen heroes of law enforcement and their families.

Light Ohio Blue Caravan Route

The Light Ohio Blue caravan will be traveling through Sunbury on Wednesday, May 6 at approximately 7:15 PM. Please see the attached route map for reference.

The procession will enter from Johnstown on State Route 37, then proceed:
• West on E. Cherry Street
• South on S. Columbus Street
• Continuing on S. Old 3 toward Galena

We encourage the community to safely line portions of the route to show support as we honor and remember Ohio’s fallen officers.

Please use caution in these areas and expect brief traffic delays along the route.
