It's that time of year when homeless people are trying to get into the shelter. It's hot outside and the storms are wicked. I wish I could fix a room for everyone who calls immediately but that isn't the case. Usually our beds are full. We do have a waiting list. Callers must be from the Northumberland, Union, or Snyder County area for a minimum of six months and pass a criminal background check. We're doing our best to serve as many as possible as quickly as we can.

Very excited!!! Again this year Haven Ministry is looking forward to participating in Raise the Region, an online fund raiser which takes place 6:00 pm March 12-11:59 pm March 13th. It's an easy peasy way to donate and help us help others! With the completion of our new nine room addition and the current much needed remodel of our existing space of the homeless shelter, we will be able to more than double the number of people we can help become contributing citizens once again. Our goal is to get our clients birth certificates, photo ID's, renewed driver's licenses, and other documents they need. Then we give them the resources to find income and housing within a three month time frame. Haven Ministry is also an energency food pantry, filling about 50 food requests monthly, fighting food insecurity for not only our clients, but also families and individuals in our communities. We receive no government funds so it is for this reason we are counting on you more than ever! We appreciate every donation, small and large, and are the best stewards of that donation. Last Saturday the USPS held their annual food drive. I am truly amazed at the amount of non perishable food items that were donated to Haven Ministry! Not only do we feed the 25-30 people that live there but we also hand out 30-40 emergency food orders a month, some up to 4 or 5 boxes of food depending on the size of the family. It is at times like this that i realize how blessed we are to have so many generous people in our area communities that are ready to help people who are truly food insecure. Many of our clients are too proud to ask for help even though they don’t know where their next meal is coming from. They don’t have the luxury of going to restaurants or door dash. They are grateful to be able to cook their own meals. They are humble and proud and do what they can with what they have and appreciate everything they receive. I love to see the little kids excited when they spot a bag of candy or pack of cookies. Yes, there are some people who expect others to do for them, who have enough but take advantage of the generosity of others. Some feel entitled. But those people are a small minority and will have to answer to a higher power. It warms my heart to see the food come in and our shelves fill up then see the orders filled and the food go out knowing that a needy family has food on the table. It seems for every can that goes out we get two donated. Thank you again for your donations! God provides!

Easter at Haven! Thank you Angel Rager and her helpers for cooking a special dinner and baskets, the North Central Bikers-Pa for the amazing egg hunt, and all from the local communities who donated baskets, candy, and goodies. Haven bought each of our kiddos a new pair of sneakers! Everyone had such a good time! We are very appreciative and blessed!

Progress! As of 3/22/24 the concrete was poured and smoothed out and the sidewalks were jackhammered (ugh the noise)! It’s moving right along!

Haven Ministry, a homeless shelter in Sunbury, is a non-profit organization that is participating in this event.
