Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law requires drivers to stop at least 10 feet from a school bus when its red lights are flashing and stop arm is extended.

Drivers must remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and the children have reached a place of safety.

For a police-observed violation, penalties can include a $250 fine, five points on your driving record, and a 60-day license suspension. Automated stop-arm camera violations are handled differently and can result in a $300 civil fine.

With students returning to school, this is an important reminder: slow down, stay alert, and NEVER pass a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing. A few extra seconds of patience can protect a child’s life.
