The Sunapee Police Department is pleased to announce that Officer Michael Booher was ceremonially sworn in by Sunapee Selectboard Chair Anthony Dolan as a full-time police officer for the Town of Sunapee during the Selectboard meeting on Monday, August 3rd.

Officer Booher brings more than a decade of law enforcement experience to the department. Prior to joining the Sunapee Police Department, he served for 11 years with Norton, Massachusetts Police Department and most recently served with the Lebanon Police Department here in New Hampshire. Before beginning his law enforcement career, Officer Booher proudly served in the United States Marine Corps.

Because Officer Booher has previous law enforcement experience, his onboarding process will require less training and he will be able to transition into patrol duties more quickly while reducing the time and cost associated with training.

Officer Booher's appointment fills the additional full-time police officer position approved by Sunapee voters at the March Town vote. This marks another significant step in strengthening the department's staffing and brings the Sunapee Police Department one step closer to filling all of its full-time officer vacancies.

The Sunapee Police Department congratulates Officer Booher on his appointment and look forward to his service to the Town of Sunapee.

The Sunapee Police Department is pleased to announce that Officer John Niederriter was ceremonially sworn-in as a part-time police officer for the Town of Sunapee during the Selectboard meeting on Monday, July 6th.

Officer Niederriter brings a wealth of law enforcement and public service experience to the department. A veteran of the United States Coast Guard, he previously served as a full-time police officer with the Sutton Police Department before relocating to Florida, where he continued his law enforcement career with the St. Augustine Police Department. Having now moved back to New Hampshire, Officer Niederriter now joins Sunapee PD, bringing with him years of law enforcement experience and a strong commitment to public service.

Officer Niederriter also holds a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Franklin Pierce University.

Because Officer Niederriter was already a certified police officer with prior law enforcement experience, his onboarding process will require significantly less training than that of a newly certified recruit. This allows him to begin serving the community more quickly while reducing both the time and cost associated with hiring and training.

Officer Niederriter's appointment fills one of three vacant part-time police officer positions within the Sunapee Police Department. The department continues to recruit qualified candidates to strengthen its ability to provide professional, community-focused policing to the residents and visitors of Sunapee.

The Sunapee Police Department congratulates Officer Niederriter on his appointment and we look forward to his service to the Town of Sunapee.

Beginning today at 12:00 p.m., portions of Central Street, Main Street, River Road, and High Street will close temporarily to accommodate the America 250 Independence Day Parade. The roads will reopen once the parade has made its way through these areas.

-This traffic pattern applies to 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞, including Sunapee residents and guests of those roads who are not attending the event.

♿𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬:

-𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 will be available during the event in the central Sunapee Harbor parking lots near the boat launch.

-The 𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞 at the start of the fireworks and will remain closed until traffic clears.

-Always use 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐬 and 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 before crossing. 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞 a vehicle will stop.

👮‍♂️𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞:

-Officers from the 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 will be stationed throughout the area, managing traffic, conducting Town Ordinance enforcement, and assisting the public to help ensure a safe and orderly event.

Chief E. Neill Cobb, Lieutenant Timothy Puchtler, and Executive Administrative Assistant Joshua Levasseur represented the Sunapee Police Department today at Governor Kelly Ayotte's press conference held at the New London Police Department announcing New Hampshire's new Bail Notification System.

The statewide system is designed to provide law enforcement officers with timely access to a defendant's current bail status and certain court-ordered bail conditions. By integrating court information directly into the New Hampshire State Police On-Line Telecommunications System (SPOTS), officers will have faster access to critical information during investigations, traffic stops, and other law enforcement encounters.

Previously, officers often had to contact courts or other law enforcement agencies to verify a person's bail status, which could result in delays. The new electronic notification system allows authorized law enforcement personnel to quickly determine whether an individual is currently on bail and identify applicable bail conditions, enhancing officer safety, improving situational awareness, and helping ensure that violations of bail conditions are addressed promptly.

Governor Ayotte was joined by New London Police Chief Emily Cobb, New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella, Department of Safety Commissioner Robert Quinn, New Hampshire State Police Major Chad Lavoie, members of the New Hampshire Judicial Branch, and law enforcement leaders from across the region to demonstrate the new technology and discuss its role in supporting the state's ongoing public safety initiatives. The Bail Notification System was developed through collaboration between the Department of Safety and the New Hampshire Judicial Branch and represents a $500,000 state investment in modernizing the exchange of critical public safety information.

The Sunapee Police Department appreciates the opportunity to participate in today's announcement and looks forward to utilizing this important new tool to enhance officer safety, improve operational efficiency, and better serve the residents and visitors of Sunapee.

The Sunapee Police Department has received reports of recent black bear sightings in and around residential neighborhoods in Georges Mills. While seeing a bear can be surprising, black bears are a completely normal and important part of New Hampshire's wildlife and are commonly found throughout the state. Most bears are naturally shy and avoid people whenever possible.

As bears become active, especially during the spring and summer months, they may be attracted to easy food sources around homes. New Hampshire Fish & Game reminds residents that preventing access to human food is the most effective way to avoid conflicts with bears.

𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨:
- Secure garbage in a garage, shed, or other enclosed area until disposal.
- Remove bird feeders when bears are active in the area. Bird seed is a highly attractive food source for bears.
- Clean grills after use and store them when possible.
- Bring pet food indoors and avoid leaving food outside overnight.
- Keep compost piles free of meat, sweet foods, and other items that may attract wildlife.
- Never intentionally feed bears. Feeding bears is illegal in New Hampshire and can lead to dangerous human-bear conflicts.

𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐫:
- Remain calm and give the bear plenty of space.
- Do not approach, feed, or attempt to interact with the animal.
- Bring pets indoors or keep them under close control and observation.
- In most cases, the bear will move on once it realizes people are nearby.

New Hampshire Fish & Game notes that maintaining a healthy bear population depends on reducing access to human food sources. A bear that finds food around homes is more likely to return and may eventually become a nuisance animal.

Sunapee Fire Department Association Announces the Passing of Retired Assistant Chief Dana Ramspott

It is with profound sadness that the Sunapee Fire Department Association announces the passing of Retired Assistant Chief Dana Ramspott following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Dana passed away on June 2, 2026, surrounded by family and friends.

Retired Assistant Chief Ramspott dedicated 41 years, 1 month, and 17 days of faithful service to the Town of Sunapee and the Sunapee Fire Department before retiring on August 31, 2025. Throughout his distinguished career, Dana rose through the ranks and served as a respected leader within the department. He helped guide the Sunapee Fire Department through numerous administrative changes and played a vital role in mentoring and training generations of firefighters and emergency responders.

Dana’s commitment to the fire service, his leadership, and his dedication to the community left a lasting impact on the department. Many of the members he helped train and mentor are now rising through the ranks themselves, continuing the legacy of service and professionalism that he exemplified throughout his career.

The members of the Sunapee Fire Department Association extend their deepest condolences to Dana’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

Funeral services for Retired Assistant Chief Dana Ramspott will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Sunapee Fire Station, located at 9 Sargent Road in Sunapee, New Hampshire.

All Fire, EMS, and Law Enforcement personnel who knew or worked with Dana are encouraged to attend. The requested attire for public safety personnel is Class A Uniforms or equivalent dress uniform attire. Members of the public are also welcome to attend and pay their respects.

For over four decades, Dana answered the call to serve his community. His contributions to the Sunapee Fire Department and the Town of Sunapee will never be forgotten.
