đźš’ Have You Noticed Some Extra Activity at the Fire Station? đźš’

If you’ve noticed some extra activity around the Sunapee Fire Station recently, you’d be correct! The Sunapee Fire Department currently has five new on-call members working their way through our in-house probationary program.

Our 8-week probationary program is taught entirely in-house and is led by Lt. Joe Hampson and Lt. Timothy White, with assistance from FF/EMR W. Sencabaugh and FF/EMT J. Galloway as instructors.

Throughout the eight weeks, our new members meet once each week in addition to attending our regular department meetings and trainings. The program introduces them to the basics of firefighting and fire department operations, including our apparatus and equipment, hose lines, ladders, water supply, personal protective equipment, radio communications, scene safety, and other skills they will use while responding with the department.

While this program does not provide a formal firefighter certification like attending a fire academy class, it is designed to give our newest members a strong foundation and help them become comfortable, safe, and effective while operating on emergency scenes. Following the program, members will continue their training and education as they work toward additional certifications and experience.

We’re excited to have five new members joining our ranks and putting in the time and effort to serve the Sunapee community!

It’s been a busy start to the weekend for Sunapee Fire!

This morning, August 29th, at 05:23, Sunapee Fire was called mutual aid to Newport for a 1st Alarm Brush Fire. Sunapee Forestry 6 responded with a crew of three. Once on scene, Sunapee Fire personnel deployed hose lines from Forestry 6 and assisted crews with fire suppression and overhaul operations.

Forestry 6 cleared the incident and returned to Sunapee just after 07:15.

Shortly after returning home, our personnel switched gears and are now standing by at the Rubber Duck Race in Sunapee Harbor, providing EMS coverage and even lending a hand corralling the ducks! 🦆🚒

From early-morning mutual aid to community events, we’re proud to serve wherever we’re needed.

🔥 Mutual Aid Brush Fire – Newport 🔥

On Saturday, August 22nd at 15:24 (3:24 PM), the Sunapee Fire Department was requested mutual aid to the Town of Newport for a 1st Alarm brush fire.

Sunapee Forestry 6, Utility 2, and the Argo UTV responded with a crew of eight Sunapee Fire personnel.

Once on scene, Sunapee Forestry 6 and the Argo UTV, along with Sunapee Fire personnel, assisted crews with fire suppression and overhaul operations.

While Sunapee Fire personnel and apparatus were committed to the incident in Newport, an engine from the Springfield Fire Department responded to the Sunapee Safety Services Building to provide station coverage for the Town of Sunapee. We would like to thank Springfield Fire for providing coverage and ensuring resources remained available in Sunapee should another emergency occur.

All Sunapee Fire units cleared the scene and returned to Sunapee at 18:20 (6:20 PM).

🚒 Sunapee Fire Department Monthly Training – First-Due Operations 🚒

Last night, Tuesday, August 18, members of the Sunapee Fire Department conducted our monthly department training. This month’s training focused on first-due fire operations, apparatus placement, fire attack, and water supply operations.

First-due operations are the initial actions taken by the first firefighters and apparatus arriving at a fire. The decisions made during the first several minutes of an incident can have a major impact on the rest of the response. These operations include evaluating the building and fire conditions, properly positioning apparatus, determining the best point of entry, deploying handlines, establishing a water supply, providing ladder access, and developing an initial plan for fire attack and rescue.

For last night’s training, members traveled to several residences belonging to members of the department and responded to each location as if there were an active structure fire. This allowed crews to practice positioning apparatus based on different driveways, building layouts, terrain, and access challenges.

Members trained with Engine 2, Ladder 5, and Rescue 1, discussing where each piece of apparatus should be positioned and what responsibilities its crew would have. Crews also discussed where Tanker 4 would be positioned if it were responding to the incident and how its placement would fit into overall fireground and water supply operations.

At each residence, crews discussed how they would initiate a fire attack, where handlines would be deployed, and how firefighters could access different areas of the residence using ground ladders or Ladder 5. Members also reviewed water supply options, including relay pumping from nearby water sources to provide a continuous supply of water to crews operating at a fire.

Training at actual residences gives our members the opportunity to work through realistic situations and see firsthand how apparatus placement and tactical decisions can change from one property to another. Practicing these decisions ahead of time helps our firefighters arrive better prepared to quickly and safely begin operations when a real emergency occurs.

The Sunapee Fire Department would like to thank Lieutenant Joe Hampson and his family, Lieutenant Timothy White and his family, and Firefighter/AEMT Cameron Summerton for allowing us to use their residences for last night’s training.

đźš’ SUNAPEE FIRE DEPARTMENT TRAINING ANNOUNCEMENT đźš’

Tomorrow, Tuesday, August 18th, beginning at 18:30 (6:30 PM), the Sunapee Fire Department will be conducting our monthly department training.

This month’s training will take place at multiple locations throughout town, including several of our members’ residences. During the evening, residents can expect to see Sunapee Fire apparatus and personnel operating in the following areas:

• North Road
• Stagecoach Road
• Winn Hill Road
• Dowd Lane

Training will begin at approximately 18:30 (6:30 PM) and is expected to continue until around 21:00 (9:00 PM).

We ask motorists traveling on these roads during this time to please use caution, reduce their speed, and remain alert for fire apparatus and fire department personnel operating on or near the roadways.

There is no emergency associated with this activity. The presence of multiple fire apparatus and personnel in these areas is part of our regularly scheduled department training.

Sunapee Fire Responds to Vehicle Fuel Spill in Sunapee Harbor

On Sunday, August 16 at 17:47, the Sunapee Fire Department was dispatched to one of the parking lots behind the gazebo in Sunapee Harbor for a reported vehicle leaking gasoline.

Upon arrival, Sunapee Fire personnel located a vehicle that had leaked a small amount of gasoline onto the paved parking lot and was continuing to leak a small amount after being moved into the adjacent dirt parking lot.

Sunapee Fire personnel, working alongside the vehicle owner, were able to stop the leak and begin cleanup operations. The affected soil in the dirt parking lot was removed, and personnel also cleaned up the gasoline that had spilled onto the paved parking lot.

The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NH DES) was notified of the incident. Due to the small amount of gasoline involved and the spill being contained to the parking lot areas, NH DES did not respond to the scene.

Lake Sunapee was not affected by this incident. The spilled gasoline remained contained within the affected parking lots and did not reach the lake or surrounding waterways.

Sunapee Fire personnel cleared the scene at 18:40.

On Sunday, August 16, 2026, at 12:34 PM, the Sunapee Fire Department, Newbury Fire Department, and New London Hospital EMS were dispatched to Lake Sunapee in the area of the Sandbar for a patient with an arm injury following a tubing accident.

Just two minutes after the initial dispatch, Sunapee Fire Boat 1 signed on responding at 12:36 PM. Boat 1 arrived and made patient contact at 12:40 PM, only six minutes after the original call.

Fire/EMS providers from Sunapee Fire immediately began patient care and tended to the patient’s injuries. Sunapee Fire Boat 1, along with the patient’s boat, then transported the patient with Fire/EMS providers on board to Georges Mills Harbor.

Sunapee Fire Car 1 and an ambulance from New London Hospital EMS were waiting at the harbor, where care was transferred to the ambulance crew. The patient was subsequently transported to New London Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Newbury Fire was canceled while en route after Sunapee Fire made patient contact and confirmed that sufficient resources were on scene. We thank Newbury Fire for their quick response and continued mutual aid partnership.

Today’s call is another example of the wide variety of emergencies our local first responders must be prepared to handle. Whether an emergency occurs in a home, on a roadway, in the woods, or out on Lake Sunapee, our responders must be trained, equipped, and ready to respond wherever they are needed.

🚤Sunapee Fire Responds to Unusual Incident🚒

On Thursday, August 13th at 14:01, the Sunapee Fire Department was dispatched to Lake Sunapee in the area between the Sunapee Harbor No Wake Marker and Dewey Beach for a report of a large tree floating in the lake and posing a hazard to boaters.

Sunapee Fire Boat 1 responded and located the large tree floating near Dewey Beach. Boat 1 personnel were able to secure a rope around the tree and safely tow it back to the Sunapee Harbor Town Docks.

Once at the docks, Sunapee Fire personnel turned the tree over to the Sunapee Highway Department, whose personnel were able to remove it from the water and dispose of it.

The Sunapee Fire Department would like to thank the Sunapee Highway Department for their assistance in quickly removing the hazard and helping keep Lake Sunapee safe for everyone enjoying the water.
