As a member of the NALC, it's essential for us to hold our leaders accountable for their actions. Today, the body of delegates took on that responsibility and made the choices they believed were right. Though I may not agree with the decisions, I will accept them. It's similar to when your favorite sports team loses a game. The same can be said about our national politics where one party wins and the other loses, and we accept the outcome each time.
Nine years ago, I was going through a rough patch. I was unhappy with my job at the post office and wanted to quit to return to my old profession. I had been suspended so many times that I felt like I was going crazy. Looking back, I realize that I could have, and probably should have, followed through with that decision based on how I felt at the time. However, a phone call with a man I deeply respect changed my course within the Postal Service and the NALC for the better. The thing he said to me still ring loud in my ears even today: "Don’t quit, get involved.” I have been a member for over twelve years and a union steward for more than 8 years. The current situation saddens me, but it won't stop me from fighting for what I believe in. If you're thinking about leaving, it's your choice, but consider this: if you could get involved and make things better, would you? If your answer is yes, I hope to meet you at a training, convention, or rap session in the near future.
I love being a City Letter Carrier and I have cherished my experience within this union. Let's address the issues that need fixing and discard what we don't need. Let's work together to build a better future for young carriers. Let's set an example! Enjoy the rest of the convention, everyone, and stay saf
