Black River Electric Cooperative - Sumter, SC We are a member-owned, nonprofit electric cooperative providing safe, reliable, affordable, quality services. So what exactly does 75 years mean to us?

Electric cooperative members in South Carolina enjoy some of the lowest rates and highest quality electric service to be found anywhere in the country - and Black River Electric Cooperative is proud to be a part of that equation. We are committed to holding down costs – just like the founders were when things first got started. In the 1930s, private power companies were not interested in serving remote areas. It was more profitable for them to serve primarily towns and along main highways. Seventy five years ago, folks out in the county were only dreaming of electricity in their homes – but that was all about to change! President Franklin Delano Roosevelt created the Rural Electrification Administration in response to the needs of rural citizens. Early cooperatives were required to collect a $5 membership fee from those choosing to become part of the cooperative. A right-of-way easement and three members per mile of power line were essential in an area before plans were made to build a power line. The first power lines were energized in late 1939 with approximately 710 original members and 175 miles of line. Black River Electric Cooperative is more than a rural electricity supplier. The cooperative provides safe, reliable electricity and other services to homes, commercial establishments, and industries across our four county service area, which includes Sumter, Lee, Clarendon and Kershaw counties. Locally owned by the members it serves, Black River is governed by a Board of Trustees elected by the membership. Trustees are members representing districts in the four counties of our region. Daily operations are managed by our President and Chief Executive Officer, Charlie Allen, and his team. We have a commitment to our community – one that we do not take lightly. It’s a history that goes back 75 years, and one that we are extremely proud of! It means we're just getting started. We continue the tradition of service and innovation and we look forward to 75 more years of providing the best to our members.
