The City of Sumter would like to inform residents that paving work on Guignard Drive will begin next week as part of ongoing roadway and safety improvements.

Crews will start at Neely Street and continue resurfacing Guignard/Bultman Drive through to Broad Street. This work is part of a larger effort to improve road conditions and enhance safety along the Bultman/Guignard corridor, including resurfacing, updated lane markings, and other safety upgrades. Work is expected to be complete by November 2026.

What to Expect:
• Temporary lane closures and minor traffic delays
• Increased construction activity in the area
• Access maintained for residents and businesses

Drivers are encouraged to use caution, reduce speeds in work zones, and plan for slight delays during construction.

This morning at the 2026 Sumter Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, the community gathered for a morning of reflection, prayer, and unity.

The keynote speaker, Chris Singleton, is a former professional athlete who was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2017. After the tragic loss of his mother in a racially motivated mass shooting, Chris turned his personal pain into a mission of hope. Today, he is an inspirational speaker and best-selling author who travels the country sharing a message of unity, forgiveness, and racial reconciliation.

We are grateful for his powerful message and for everyone who joined together to pray for our community, our leaders, and our future.

As temperatures rise and families head outdoors, water becomes a big part of how we relax, recharge, and spend time together here in Sumter. From days at the pool to afternoons on the lake, these moments bring fun, connection, and a boost to our overall well-being.

But with that enjoyment comes responsibility.

Water safety starts with awareness and action. Whether you’re swimming, boating, or simply spending time near the water, it’s important to stay alert, follow posted safety guidelines, and never rely solely on flotation devices. Most importantly, children should always be within arm’s reach of a responsible adult—no exceptions.
We’re grateful for the dedicated aquatics professionals, parks staff, and safety advocates who work year-round to educate our community and keep our recreational spaces safe for everyone.

Mayor David P. Merchant has officially proclaimed May 2026 as National Water Safety Month in the City of Sumter, reminding us all to stay vigilant and take simple, proactive steps to protect ourselves and those around us.

Let’s make this a safe and memorable season on the water. 💧

🎾 Game, set, match—May is National Tennis Month in Sumter! 🎾

The City of Sumter is proud to recognize the game of tennis as more than just a sport—it’s a lifelong activity that promotes physical fitness, mental well-being, and meaningful connections for all ages.

At the heart of it all is the Palmetto Tennis Center—a nationally recognized destination that has been serving our community since 2004. With 24 hard courts, 8 red clay courts, and 4 pickleball courts (all lighted for evening play), it’s one of the most complete racquet sport facilities in the Southeast. From free-to-play courts to professional instruction for players as young as four, there’s truly something for everyone.

The addition of the Philip L. Edwards Clay Courts has only strengthened Sumter’s reputation as a premier destination for competitive play and high-quality programming—thanks to strong community partnerships and a shared commitment to excellence.

This May, we invite you to pick up a racquet, hit the courts, and experience all that tennis has to offer. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player, there’s no better time to get involved, stay active, and connect with your community.

🏆 Join us in celebrating National Tennis Month—right here in Sumter!
