Now that school buses have hit the road for the new school year, let's review when you must stop for a school bus!

Two-lane road:
Traffic traveling in BOTH directions must stop.

Three or more marked lanes:
Only traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop. Drivers traveling in the opposite direction do not have to stop.

Divided roadway:
If the roadway is divided into separate roadways by a median or physical barrier, traffic traveling in the opposite direction does not have to stop. Traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop.

Roadway with a center turn lane:
A marked center turn lane counts as a traffic lane. If the roadway has three or more marked lanes, including a center turn lane, traffic traveling in the opposite direction does not have to stop. Traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop.

Remember: When the red lights are flashing and the stop paddle is out, it’s time to STOP!

Before he was Officer Anderson, he was just a kid heading back to school like everyone else.

This year, Officer Anderson is back in school for a slightly different reason. helping keep our students safe, building relationships, and supporting our schools as Sumner PD’s School Resource Officer.

As backpacks get packed, alarm clocks get set, and we all start wondering where the summer went, we want to wish all of our students, teachers and staff a fun, safe and productive school year!

As we begin a new school year tomorrow, student safety is a top priority. Make sure to review these back-to-school safety tips with your children.

1. Arrive and leave safely – Use designated walkways, cross at crosswalks, and follow traffic signals.
2. Follow school rules – Listen to teachers and staff, and obey classroom and campus rules.
3. Report concerns – Tell a trusted adult if you see bullying, suspicious behavior, or unsafe conditions.
4. Keep emergency contacts updated – Make sure the school has current contact information for your family.
5. Stay with friends – Walk in groups whenever possible, especially before or after school.
6. Avoid strangers – Never leave school with someone you do not know or without permission.
7. Use the internet safely – Never share personal information online, and report cyberbullying.
8. Keep personal belongings secure – Store valuables safely and avoid bringing unnecessary expensive items.

If we work together through education, communication and preparation, we can ensure that this school year is a safe one.

PRESS RELEASE:

On August 26, 2026, at approximately 3:00 PM, Puyallup Police were dispatched to a call of a domestic violence-related burglary and assault at an apartment complex in the 900 block of 9th Street SE in Puyallup. A 46-year-old male had forced his way into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment before tackling her to the ground and punching her in the head. The male initially prevented the female from calling 911, but then fled when she regained her phone and called police. The female was treated at the scene for her injuries.

Puyallup Police and Sumner Police officers responded to the male suspect’s last known address in the 7300 block of 166th Avenue East in unincorporated Pierce County. Officers ultimately confirmed that the suspect was at that location, and surrounded the property while trying to negotiate a peaceful surrender. The suspect eventually came outside but would not comply with officers. Officers attempted to negotiate with the male for an extended period, and Sumner Police deployed a drone to monitor his movements.

Puyallup Police ultimately deployed less than lethal options while trying to take the suspect into custody, to include pepper balls and a police K-9. As officers moved in to arrest the male suspect, he detonated an explosive device, killing himself. Four Puyallup Police officers and a Puyallup Police K-9 were in the vicinity of the blast, and were later seen at a local hospital for possible injuries.

The Puyallup Police Department Investigative Services Unit responded to the scene and is conducting an investigation. The Hazardous Devices (Bomb) Squad from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist with the investigation.

DEVELOPING: Our officers, along with neighboring agencies, are in the area of 7300 166th Ave E following a felony DV situation that occurring in the City of Puyallup. Area residents have sheltered in place and there is a large police presence. For now, please stay out of the area and allow first responders to work. Puyallup Police investigators are on scene and we will have further updates later.

Sumner saw another encouraging year for public safety in 2025, with overall reported crime dropping more than 30% compared with 2024. At the same time, our department’s clearance rate improved from 17.8% to 22.2%, meaning our officers solved a greater percentage of reported crimes.

Some of the biggest improvements were in property crime:
• Motor vehicle theft down 57%
• Burglary down 24%
• Larceny/theft down 33%
• Property destruction down 41%
• Reported stolen-property losses fell from $4.09 million to $1.83 million

There is still work to do. Aggravated assaults, sexual assaults, and fraud increased in 2025, and our department has identified these as areas requiring continued attention.

Crime rates declined across all categories in Washington state in 2025, with reductions reported in murders, violent crime, and property crime. These findings come from the annual Crime in Washington Report (2025 Crime in Washington-compressed.pdf) compiled by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC). The report tracks crime and arrest data submitted by law enforcement agencies throughout Washington State.

Overall, the numbers show meaningful progress and reinforce the value of proactive policing, technology, strong investigations and partnerships with our community.

The Sumner Police Department is inviting community members to review and provide feedback on proposed policies and procedures related to the Keep Washington Working Act.

The Keep Washington Working Act establishes requirements for how Washington law enforcement agencies interact with federal immigration authorities. As part of our commitment to transparency, accountability, and compliance with state law, the Sumner Police Department has developed updated policies and procedures that are now available for public review.

Community input is an important part of this process. We encourage residents, business owners, and other interested community members to review the proposed policies and share their comments or questions.

We had a wonderful National Night Out yesterday!

Yesterday, our officers, Chief, Deputy Chief, Lieutenant, and Mayor along with members from the Department of Corrections Puyallup Probation Office and East Pierce Fire & Rescue visited three National Night Out gatherings throughout our community: Kincaid Court Senior Housing, Seasons at Sumner Valley, and a neighborhood gathering hosted by a former reserve deputy from the Sheriff's department.
