On 4-18-2026 at 7:42 pm, the Sumner Fire Department was paged to a report of a dumpster fire behind a commercial building on Jackson Street. The first engine went in route in 3 minutes and was on scene 4 minutes after the original page. Once on scene, it was discovered that the fire had extended into the eves and the attic crawl space of the building. After knocking down the fire in the rear of the building, firefighters made entry into the building where they encountered moderate smoke. It was then decided to access the roof to allow vertical positive pressure ventilation.
Firefighters worked for roughly an hour to ensure there were no hot spots and the smoke had cleared the building. There was significant damage to the building as well as its contents. There were no injuries reported at the time of the fire. The Sumner Fire Department was assisted on scene by Sumner Emergency Medical Services and Bremer County Sheriff's Office

🌪️ STATEWIDE TORNADO DRILL: MARCH 25 AT 10:00 AM

The Bremer County Sheriff’s Office is proud to participate in the Statewide Tornado Drill this Wednesday, March 25, at 10:00 AM. This annual exercise is a vital part of Severe Weather Awareness Week. We encourage all residents, businesses, and schools to use this time to practice their severe weather plans!

⚠️ Important Safety Reminders:
Sirens are for Outdoors: Outdoor warning sirens are designed only to alert those who are outside to seek shelter. They are often not audible inside homes or offices.

Stay Informed: Don't rely on a single source for warnings. We recommend:
📲 Alert Iowa: Sign up for local emergency notifications at https://www.smart911.com/smart911/ref/login.action?pa=bremercountyia
📻 NOAA Weather Radio: Your best source for 24/7 life-saving information.
📱 Weather Apps: Download a trusted weather app for real-time watches and warnings.

📢 Monthly Siren Testing
As a reminder, Bremer County routinely tests all outdoor sirens on the first Tuesday of each month (April–November) at 11:00 AM.
Note: To prevent confusion, testing will be postponed if there is a threat of actual severe weather on a scheduled date. For more information and real-time updates, go to https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057355183968

On 2/13/26 at 10:01pm, the Sumner Volunteer Fire Department was paged to the Sumner-Fredericksburg Community School District bus barn after Bremer County Dispatch received multiple 911 calls stating the bus barn was on fire and had visible flames.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a working fire that had self ventilated through the roof of the structure and was starting to endanger several buses, parked nearby.
Within one minute of the first engine arriving on scene, water was being applied via (2) 1 1/2” hand lines. A water supply was established from a nearby hydrant and a second engine was setting up on the rear side of the structure.
At this time, school staff was notified to help relocate the buses away from the fire ground and Fredericksburg Fire was requested for mutual aid.
The construction of the building divides the bus barn into compartments. This helped to contain the fire to only one compartment. However, vehicles in the adjacent compartment did have smoke and heat damage.
The Sumner Volunteer Fire Department remained on scene for 2 1/2 hours. There were no injuries reported at the time of the fire.
At this time, we are working with school officials to help determine the cause of the fire, and we ask everyone to stay clear of the structure.
The Sumner Volunteer Fire Department was assisted on scene by Fredericksburg Firefighters Association Sumner Emergency Medical Services Bremer County Sheriff's Office and the Sumner Municipal Light Plant.

**AWESOME LINK AT THE BOTTOM**
With Fire Prevention Week wrapped up, Operation Edith 2025 in the books, it's time to start thinking about changing the batteries in your smoke detector. We like to use Daylight Savings as a way to remember to change the batteries of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Another thing to remember is almost all detectors have a lifespan of 10 years. Some detectors will go into an alarm just to let you know its done its job for 10 years and it would like to be retired. Even though you may have only had a smoke or carbon monoxide detector for a handful of years, it's important to remember the 10 year service life starts at the date of manufacture. That can be found on the back side of most detectors.
Another useful tip is to take a permanent marker and write the date of install on both the detector and the battery; but never paint over a detector.
Check out this link to KIDDE's virtual reality escape plan simulator. It is a really cool simulation with added statistics that help visualize a fire, its growth and just how little time you have to escape. That's why fire departments stress the importance of preplanning for the homeowner as well as the firefighters to reduce the amount of critical time lost in an emergency.
