**AWESOME LINK AT THE BOTTOM**
With Fire Prevention Week wrapped up, Operation Edith 2025 in the books, it's time to start thinking about changing the batteries in your smoke detector. We like to use Daylight Savings as a way to remember to change the batteries of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Another thing to remember is almost all detectors have a lifespan of 10 years. Some detectors will go into an alarm just to let you know its done its job for 10 years and it would like to be retired. Even though you may have only had a smoke or carbon monoxide detector for a handful of years, it's important to remember the 10 year service life starts at the date of manufacture. That can be found on the back side of most detectors.
Another useful tip is to take a permanent marker and write the date of install on both the detector and the battery; but never paint over a detector.
Check out this link to KIDDE's virtual reality escape plan simulator. It is a really cool simulation with added statistics that help visualize a fire, its growth and just how little time you have to escape. That's why fire departments stress the importance of preplanning for the homeowner as well as the firefighters to reduce the amount of critical time lost in an emergency.
