One of the most heartwarming parts of serving as your District 2 Councilwoman is welcoming some of our newest residents.

Every baby represents hope, possibility, and a future we are all helping to build together. As I say, it takes a village but the possibilities are endless, and anything is possible.

One of my favorite things to do is deliver this small gift along with a special message written inside this book to your baby. My hope is that one day, years from now, they can look back and read the words of encouragement written to them inside this keepsake book for when they first entered this world by someone who cared deeply about the future of our community.

If you live in District 2 and are expecting a new bundle of joy, please let me know. I would love to personally welcome your baby as our newest resident.

After all, today’s newborns are tomorrow’s leaders, teachers, entrepreneurs, first responders, neighbors and our friends. We have to help take care of each other and our community from day one. And I believe every child deserves to begin life knowing that their community is cheering them on.

Congratulations to all the growing families in our community. Summerville’s future is bright because of you.

Most of you already know when our regular Town Council meetings are held, and you know the public is always welcome to attend or watch online. Many of you in District 2 also receive my monthly newsletter, and if you do not but would like to, please let me know.

What many residents may not realize is that a lot of important discussion often happens before an item ever reaches the full Council meeting. Our Standing Committee meetings are held on the Monday before the Thursday Council meeting, and this is often where the “sausage is made.”

These committee meetings are where items are first discussed, questions are asked, staff updates are given, and recommendations are sometimes made before an issue moves forward to the full Council for consideration.

The public does not speak during these meetings, and council members who are not assigned to a particular committee generally do not participate in that committee’s discussion either. However, the public is welcome to attend or watch online.

I wanted to share this because attending or watching these meetings can give you a better understanding of what may be coming before Council later that week and why.

For example, this Monday’s Standing Committee agenda includes several items that may be of interest, including discussion on amendments to the current noise ordinance, additional parking on Sumter Avenue and Jessamine Lane, the Town potentially taking over West Richardson Avenue from SCDOT, proposed downtown overlay district discussions, financial reports, the Public Safety Complex update, and more.

There are often difficult decisions to be made by Council, and I do not pretend to always have the right answer. I look to my constituents to help guide me. I want to know how you feel, what matters most to you, and how you would like me to represent you when these issues come before us.

You can watch meetings live through the Town’s live-streaming page here:

https://www.summervillesc.gov/159/Live-Streaming-Meetings

As always, I will continue doing my best to keep you informed and to vote with due diligence, thoughtfulness, and heart. I also encourage you to listen in when you can and share your feedback with me. The more residents understand the process, the stronger and more connected our community becomes.

Hey Weatherstone! If you are available today, stop by your pool today from 12-2p to meet Michael Parker, who is running to be your next councilman for Berkeley County District 7.

I recently had an important conversation with Michael Parker. We talked for a long time and I felt like I learned who he was and what he stood for.

He's a Berkeley County farmer and lifelong community member. Let me tell you why I’m endorsing him, and what I asked him to commit to on your behalf.

Michael is running because he watched development devour the farmland around his family’s fields until he realized his own children might have nothing left to work. He’s not a career politician. He’s someone who finally had enough and decided to do something about it. I respect that deeply because that was me exactly.

His district covers significant ground in Berkeley County, but the part that matters most to you and me is the corridor running right through Summerville your neighborhood. That’s also where Michael told me his roots in this region began, working in hospitality at the Holiday Inn near Cracker Barrel, right here in our area.

When I raised the issue of pedestrian connectivity and sidewalks in that area — something many of you have brought to me — he didn’t hedge. He agreed it was a problem and personally committed to working with his council, me and the town to address it.

I want you to know that so you can hold him to it, and hold me accountable for following through with him as well.

Beyond our immediate neighborhood, Michael and I share a clear vision: infrastructure must be planned and funded before development arrives, not after. Developers, not existing residents should carry the cost of the water, sewer, and road capacity their projects demand.

And SCDOT must be pushed hard on the 1,100 miles of state-maintained roads in Berkeley County that desperately need attention.

I also shared something sobering with Michael: even as Berkeley County ranks among the fastest-growing counties in the country, South Carolina ranks second in the nation for foreclosure actions filed. People are being left behind. Growth that doesn’t work for existing residents isn’t success, it’s displacement. He heard that.

I told him I take this to heart, and I needed him to really hear what I was saying. I believe he did.

Michael told me he doesn’t have all the answers and knows there’s a lot he still has to learn but he said together, we can figure it out.

After our conversation, I believe him, and I believe he will be a genuine partner for District 2 on the Berkeley County Council. I endorse Michael Parker for Berkeley County Council District 7, and I will be watching, alongside all of you to make sure these conversations become action.

Please stop by the Weatherstone pool today from 12–2 PM and meet him for yourself.

Grant applications for State Accommodations Tax funds are being accepted online now through 12pm on Friday, May 22, 2026. All previous ATAX funding applicants have been notified, and we have already received a few applications in. It looks like there will likely be about $483,000 available for all nonprofit candidates.

The State ATAX Advisory Committee meets on June 9, 2026 to review all grant applications and decide on their recommendations for Council to consider at your June 11, 2026 Council meeting.

Good luck to everyone!

The Town of Summerville’s State Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee meets in May or June of every year to review applications from organizations wishing to secure State Accommodations Tax funds from the Town in order to promote tourism.

Even as a Summerville native, our town still finds ways to surprise me.

A simple Saturday morning stroll turned into a stop at the Farmers Market, where I picked up fresh veggies and even discovered homemade bone marrow butter—who knew!

Of course I couldn’t resist stopping into … and let’s just say I left with more than I planned. But I found some beautiful, high quality pieces that were made in America and India, which I always appreciate.

Supporting local, discovering new favorites, and enjoying the charm of our community… moments like these are what make Summerville so special. I hope you have the opportunity to stop in and see Jen for a customized shopping experience and yes, I’m wearing it all! 💛
