Town of Sullivan's Island

Town of Sullivan's Island Sullivan's Island is a small barrier island outside of Charleston, SC. Home to less than 2000 residents, it boasts a rich history and beautiful beaches.

The Town of Sullivan’s Island, a barrier island north of Charleston Harbor, is comprised of less than 1,700 residents in half as many households. These are primarily full or part time citizens, who enjoy the relaxed lifestyle of the Island. There are very few short-term rentals and no hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, or other transient lodging. The Town, incorporated in 1817 as Moultrieville, d

id not allow lean-tos or shacks then as now. At that time lots were required to have a minimum of ½ acre and the same is true today. Sullivan’s Island is unique in that the beachfront land, which has accreted over the years, is owned by the Town and held in a perpetual easement by the Lowcountry Open Land Trust, protecting the natural environment along the Atlantic Ocean. This Island has a long military history of protecting the harbor from invaders and there are many wonderful histories which capture those stories. Remnants of the military are abundant in now privately held military housing; even former fortifications are now single family residences. Many of these historic homes have withstood the test of time and ravaging weather.

Beginning on March 16, 2026, there will be a road closure around Middle Street and Station 28 1/2 to install new drainage infrastructure.

For approximately six weeks, local traffic will be permitted access around barricades installed at eastbound lanes on Middle Street and Station 28 1/2, and westbound lanes on Middle and Station 28 1/2. Like previous traffic detours for this project, all residents will have access to their properties. All vehicles (delivery trucks, school busses, solid waste collection etc.) will be allowed access around the “Road Closed to Thru Traffic” signage. A map is available on our website.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience these construction impacts may cause. If you have questions or concerns regarding this notice, please contact Joe Henderson at [email protected] or by phone at (843) 883-5731.

We are very excited to invite you to our first community coffee event with town staff and a member of the Town Council! This casual meet-and-greet is all about bringing neighbors together for friendly conversation in a comfortable and easygoing setting.

Stop by to enjoy a cup of coffee, connect with the people who serve our community, ask questions, share ideas, and hear about what’s happening around town. There is no schedule and no speeches, just open conversation and a chance to get to know one another.

We hope you’ll join us for this very special first event and help kick off what we hope will be many more opportunities to connect! Everyone is welcome.
