Lake effect snow will begin to ramp up this morning across northern Indiana, bringing several inches of accumulation.

A quick burst of snow (snow squall) will begin to push southward across the state this morning. This squall could lead to quick accumulations of 1-2" as far south as about I-70. Winds will gust to 30-40mph as well as this snow squall passes through. Use caution if you are out on the roads and plan for slick conditions and rapidly deteriorating visibilities.

Winds will continue to gust behind the initial snow band, and this will aid in lake effect snow ramping up for northern Indiana counites. This lake effect snow will be an all day event, likely continuing into the overnight hours. By the time sunrise Thursday rolls around, some areas of northern Indiana may have 4 to 14" or more of new snow accumulation.

This overall setup for lake effect snow is quite intriguing. We here at IWO would NOT be surprised if we saw a couple reports top 24" or 2 feet of snow. Confidence in that is lower, but this setup definitely has potential to overachieve.

Snowfall rates may top 1-2" PER HOUR at times through late tonight into Thursday morning. Thundersnow is also possible within the heaviest snow bands.

If you live within the heaviest snow accumulation forecast area, avoid travel if possible beginning around noon today. The combination of heavy snow and gusty winds to 40mph will lead to treacherous road conditions, and potentially near impossible travel.
