🔥In today’s Tech Tip Tuesday: The "Shadow" Threat: Is your smoke detector in a Dead Air Space? 🌑💨
You might have a smoke detector on every floor, but if it’s tucked into a corner or hidden behind a ceiling beam, it might as well not be there at all.
"Dead Air Space" is a major code violation and a danger to your building.
What is Dead Air Space, you may ask?
Imagine smoke rising from a fire. When it hits the ceiling, it doesn’t immediately fill the corners where the wall meets the ceiling. Instead, the smoke "curls" away, leaving a pocket of stagnant, clean air in the corners.
If your detector is mounted in that "shadow" or pocket of dead air:
1️⃣ Delayed Detection: The smoke won’t reach the sensor until the fire is much larger.
2️⃣ Code Violation: NFPA 72 requires detectors to be at least 4 inches away from any wall/ceiling corner.
3️⃣ False Security: You think you’re protected, but the "smoke highway" is bypassing your sensor!
Bryan’s Pro Tip: 💡
Check your detectors today. Are they jammed into a tight corner? Are they behind a decorative beam or a large light fixture? If a smoke detector is "hidden," the smoke can't find it.
