Explore Juneteenth history at the Fort Bend County Libraries
The Juneteenth holiday is June 19, but at the George Memorial Library in Richmond, delving into the holiday’s history begins on May 29 with the library’s history presentation, Local-History Research: The Freedom Tree, from 10:30 – 11:30 am in Room 2A of the library, located at 1001 Golfview Drive in Richmond.
This presentation will explore the connection between Juneteenth and the local Freedom Tree, located between Glenn Lakes and Lake Olympia Boulevards along Misty Hollow Drive in the Freedom Tree Park of Missouri City, Texas.
Registration is required for this event, and it closes on May 28. The event will repeat on June 10 in Room 2C of the George Memorial Library.
On June 17, from 1:30 – 4:30 pm in the Meeting Room of George Memorial, the public is invited to Juneteenth Afternoon: Film & Craft, an afternoon of film, creativity, and community, sponsored by Friends of the George Memorial Library.
The event will also feature a powerful, thought-provoking movie that honors Black history and resilience. After the film, participants can create Morse-code bracelets as a hands-on way to reflect on themes of communication, freedom, and expression. Snacks will be provided.
Later that same day, but at the Missouri City Branch Library, the public is welcome to Teacakes and Hibiscus Tea and a Movie: Juneteenth Feature Film Edition, sponsored by Friends of the Missouri City Branch Library.
Library visitors will watch a 2018 PG-13-rated film featuring the character of T'Challa, heir to the hidden but advanced kingdom of Wakanda, who must step forward to lead his people into a new future and confront a challenger from his country's past.
The showing takes place on Wednesday, June 17, in the Meeting Room of the Missouri City Branch Library, 1530 Texas Parkway in Missouri City, from 6:00 – 8:30 pm.
The Missouri City Branch Library will have additional Juneteenth celebration and education events for the public, including the Freedom Gardens: Juneteenth Celebration on June 5 from 2:30 – 3:30 pm in the library’s Conference Room.
Participants at this event will explore the history and cultural significance of “freedom gardens,” which served as a form of resilience, self-sufficiency, and community-building in Black American history. They will also have the chance to plant their own small container garden to take home.
On June 12, the library will host Roots & Recipes: Stories Behind the Food: Juneteenth Celebration from 2:30 – 3:30 pm in the Conference Room.
Those who wish to participate in the Roots & Recipes event are invited – but not required – to bring a favorite family recipe to share and discuss. Together, the class will explore the cultural traditions, memories, and history behind the dishes that connect people. Recipe cards will also be available to contribute to a growing community collection.
