On August 5, 2025, emergency crews were dispatched to cardiac arrest of a tugboat Captain on the Missouri River. Responding to the call, Sugar Creek Fire Department’s firefighters Jacob Ferrell and Tony Pearce, along with Captain Jason Rivera and Chief Richardson, arrived on scene and quickly determined that the unique location and river terrain made the rescue especially challenging. Chief Richardson, who served as incident commander, requested mutual aid from the Independence Fire Department to help with manpower to retrieve the patient from the tugboat on the water. The Patient was found pulseless in the ship’s galley. Sugar Creek crew immediately began CPR in the tight quarters, reviving the Patient. AMR arrived on scene to assist, when the patient coded again. Sugar Creek Firefighters and AMR were able to revive the patient once more with the use of department’s LUCAS device. Together the agencies developed a creative and unorthodox plan, using ladders and ropes to safely remove the patient from the tugboat and deliver him to waiting EMS crews on shore for advanced medical care and transport. The patient received care from the hospital’s trauma and cardiac teams upon arrival. He was released from the hospital several days later and has since made a full recovery.
Heroism Award-
Nominees: Firefighter Ferrell, Firefighter Bracken
In February 2026, Sugar Creek Police and Firefighters were dispatched to the area of an unknown gunshot incident. While en route to the scene, Dispatch updated the information that there was a juvenile that had been shot inside the residence. Once inside, Firefighters Bracken and Ferrell worked with Officers to stabilize the 3yr old patient with significant entry and exit wounds caused by an unintentional, self-inflicted gunshot. Using teamwork and outside the box thinking, the child’s wounds were packed and pressure applied to stabilize the patient until AMR arrived on scene to assist and provide transport. Crews rapidly removed the child from the residence and into the ambulance where Firefighters Ferrell and Bracken assisted the AMR crew. With the Patient’s critical state AMR requested both firefighters ride and assist en route to the hospital. With a Sugar Creek Police es**rt to Children's Mercy Hospital, the patient was rushed into surgery and has since been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
