SUFFOLK, Virginia (September 11, 2026): At 7:10 p.m., Suffolk Emergency Communications dispatched Suffolk Fire & Rescue for a commercial structure fire in the 3200 block of Desert Road. At 7:23 p.m., Engine 3 arrived and reported a large commercial warehouse heavily involved in fire with exposure issues.

Due to the amount of fire, a defensive operation was declared by the Incident Commander. Multiple handlines were deployed to protect exposures, power lines, a radio tower, heavy equipment, and large propane tanks that were impinged by the fire. The building involved in fire was a two-story, 60’ x 100’ metal warehouse. Several structural collapses occurred during firefighting operations. The fire was placed under control at 8:38 p.m. Two firefighters were injured, with one requiring transportation to the hospital and is in stable condition. The Suffolk Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause and origin of the fire. Firefighting operations will continue throughout the night. Desert Rd and Clay Hill Rd. will be closed for firefighting operations for several more hours. Suffolk Public Works is providing specialized equipment to aid in suppression operations.

Responding units were Battalion 1, Car 10, Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Engine 8, EMS 1, FM 6, Ladder 3, Ladder 6, Medic 3, Rescue 1, Safety 1, Tanker 1, Tanker 7, Tanker 8, and Gates County (NC) Tanker 41, and Suffolk Public Works.

For an effective and safe response to swift-water emergencies, Suffolk Fire & Rescue maintains a highly trained and well-equipped Water Rescue–Technical Rescue Team (TRT) prepared to respond to water-related incidents.
Recently, members of Suffolk’s TRT conducted swift-water rescue training on the Roanoke River in Weldon, North Carolina, strengthening their skills to maintain a high level of proficiency and readiness.
Ongoing, training ensures our team is highly prepared to respond safely, effectively, and confidently when swift-water emergencies occur
