The wheels on the "Bike Bus" go 'round and 'round, all through the town. The Sudbury Police Department assisted with a Noyes Elementary, parent organized, Ride to School today. The event was larger than expected and we apologize for some of the unanticipated traffic. However, if you were slowed in traffic watching, we hope the smiles on the kids made your slight delay a little brighter!

In the early 19th century, when train travel was one of the most common ways to get around, railways served as important channels for spreading news and ideas. Politicians often traveled along rail routes, making “whistle stops” to campaign, share their views, and connect with local communities.

In keeping with that tradition, (and with so many historical celebrations taking place this year) the Sudbury Police Department is launching its own campaign for safety. We have created a modern version of the whistle stop along our historic rail trails. Throughout the summer, both announced and pop-up events will give residents the opportunity to meet and interact with officers while promoting safe rail trail use.

Yesterday, we held one of these events, and it was encouraging to see that the vast majority of trail users were practicing safe and responsible behavior. We were pleased to recognize many of them with various giveaways and department swag.

If you see us out on the trail, please stop by, say hello, and talk with us about our safety campaign. These events are intended to be educational, engaging, and fun. However, if we observe unsafe behavior, we will address it to help keep the trails safe for everyone.

Italian Ice is back! While we won’t be dropping a new hit track this year, if you hear someone humming “Italian-Ice Ice Baby,” you’ll know why. Last year’s musical debut may have been our one and only chart-topper, but the memories are still as cool as ever.

The Sudbury Police Department is excited to once again reward good behavior with Italian Ice tokens, thanks to the generosity of Mike Jones at Ye' Olde Farm Stand.

So stop, collaborate, and listen—good choices could earn you a sweet treat this summer!

The Sudbury Police Department does not want to reinvent the wheel when it comes to pedestrian and bicycle safety. However, advancements in technology have outpaced current Massachusetts General Laws. The growing popularity, affordability, and availability of advanced micromobility devices—particularly e-bikes—has drawn attention within our suburban community.

The department is preparing to host educational seminars for residents who have questions about these devices. In the meantime, we would like to share some guidance based on information from MassDOT.

There are several important things to remember when operating any bicycle and sharing the roadway. Under Massachusetts law, a bicyclist is considered the operator of a vehicle. Therefore, when crossing a public roadway while riding, you are not considered a pedestrian. Bicycles, including e-bikes, must follow the rules of the road when entering or crossing traffic.

For example, if you ride across a rail trail crossing—which functions as a crosswalk—you do not automatically have the right of way. However, if you dismount your bicycle and walk it across the roadway, you are then considered a pedestrian and are afforded the legal protections associated with safely using a crosswalk. Motorists who fail to stop for pedestrians in a marked crosswalk, or for pedestrians waiting at the edge of the roadway, may face significant monetary penalties.

That said, pedestrians also share responsibility for roadway safety. Individuals should not suddenly enter the roadway without allowing drivers sufficient time to stop. Visibility is critical, especially when vehicles weighing several thousand pounds may be traveling at speeds of 20 mph or more. Pedestrians should use available crossing signals and push-button lighting systems, wear bright or reflective clothing, and make clear visual contact with approaching drivers whenever possible.

The Massachusetts Legislature is currently working to clarify portions of the law regarding e-bikes. Until then, our goal is to educate riders and promote safe operation, particularly for those who may not fully understand the capabilities and limitations of these devices.

Under current guidance, an e-bike should not be capable of traveling faster than 20 mph solely through throttle use. If a device exceeds that capability, it may instead qualify as a motorized bicycle or moped, which requires proper registration and licensing.

E-bike riders are strongly encouraged to wear helmets, and helmets are required by law for riders under the age of 16. E-bikes are generally prohibited from operating on sidewalks; however, rail trails are not considered sidewalks.

It is also important to note that e-dirt bikes are not the same as e-bikes. E-dirt bikes are classified as off-road vehicles and are subject to separate restrictions, age requirements, and regulations.

We will be increasingly more visible on the rail trail and at the street crossings and if you observe unsafe activity please call Sudbury Police at 978-443-1042.

Special Town Meeting – Parking Information Update

A Special Town Meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at 7PM in Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Gymnasium. As there are other events taking place at the High School that evening, voters are advised to allow ample time for parking and walking to the gymnasium. In addition, please note that the Town Meeting venue is the L-SRHS Gymnasium and not the Auditorium, as during the Annual Town Meeting earlier this month.

Other events taking place at L-SRHS on Wednesday 5/20 evening will be held in the Auditorium and Cafeteria. As the L-S parking lot is anticipated to have a high volume of vehicles entering and exiting at once, particularly around 7PM, drivers are asked to proceed with added caution and watch for pedestrians.

The parking spaces by the High School front entrance will be reserved for accessible parking only.

Overflow parking will be available at Nixon Elementary School and Featherland Park, however capacity at Featherland will be somewhat reduced as sports will be in progress on the athletic fields until 10PM. Additional lighting will be in place at the crosswalks between Featherland Park and the High School for those returning to vehicles at Featherland at the conclusion of Town Meeting. Please note that parking is not allowed along Lincoln Road and Concord Road.

If possible, it is recommended that voters:
• Carpool to/from all events held at L-SRHS on May 20
• Drop off voters who use a wheelchair or have other mobility challenges in close proximity to the Gymnasium entrance prior to parking
• Budget extra time to arrive at Town Meeting. The parking lot will be busiest around 7PM.
