****UPDATE MISSING MAN LOCATED SAFE****

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 28, 2026
Meade County, South Dakota

Search Continues for Missing Meade County Man

The Meade County Sheriff’s Office and assisting agencies are continuing the search for Daniel Carda, 83, who was last seen at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, near his residence in the 5400 block of Meadow Retreat Road in rural Black Hawk. He was last observed walking toward Erickson Ranch Road, but his direction of travel after that is unknown.

Carda has cognitive decline and was not dressed for the cold, wet conditions when he was last seen. Emergency responders searched the area overnight, including nearby outbuildings and other structures, but have not located him. Rain has made tracking difficult. Crews expect to use drones and other search methods today as conditions allow.

Residents near Meadow Retreat Road and Erickson Ranch Road are asked to check their shops, sheds, outbuildings, and other places where someone might have sought shelter. Anyone who sees Carda or has information about his whereabouts should call 911 immediately.

The Black Hawk and Piedmont Volunteer Fire Departments, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and Pennington County Search and Rescue are assisting in the search.
The Sheriff’s Office will provide additional updates as information becomes available.

**Friday September 25th Homecoming Parade**

Where: Ballpark Rd through downtown
See map

Beginning at 2pm traffic will be redirected throughout the route.
Here is the route for the Homecoming parade.

Please note it will start at 3pm.

Also Ball Park Road from Dolan Creek to Farley Street will be closed to southbound traffic 1:30pm to 2pm. It will be closed to Northbound traffic from 2pm to 4pm. We realize these closures are frustrating, but they allow for the safety of kids being dropped off and parade participants setting up their floats and getting ready for the Parade.

Due to congestion of the area, we advise you to find alternate routes and try to avoid Ballpark Road unless necessary Friday September 25th from 1:30pm to 4pm.

***TURKEY VULTURE DETERRENCE***

Residents in the area of Pine Street may hear some loud, unexpected noises over the next several days that sounds like gunshots.

Our Police Department will be using a bird banger noise maker as a non-lethal deterrent to discourage a group of turkey vultures from congregating in the area. The birds have been causing property concerns and creating unpleasant odors, and our goal is to encourage them to relocate to the surrounding hills where they can roost without causing these issues.

The bird banger is being used specifically as a wildlife deterrent, and no harm to the vultures is intended.

We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding while we work to resolve the situation. If you hear a loud bang in the Pine Street area, there is no need for concern, it is part of this temporary wildlife management effort.

Thank you for your cooperation!
