The Sturgis Department of Public Safety is proud to recognize two members of our Honor Guard who attended National Police Week activities in Washington, D.C., representing our department and community while honoring the memory of fallen officers. Their participation reflected our department’s continued commitment to remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Their service was especially meaningful as they paid tribute to Sturgis Town Marshal John W. Craig, the only Police Officer in Sturgis history to be killed in the line of duty. Town Marshal John W. Craig was killed in the line of duty on September 26, 1899, while attempting to arrest two robbery suspects near the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad station in Sturgis. He was shot when the suspects opened fire from a boxcar, and the suspects were never apprehended.
In addition to attending National Police Week events in Washington, D.C., members of the Honor Guard also attended the Michigan Law Enforcement Memorial in Lansing to honor Town Marshal John W. Craig. This year carried added significance, as Town Marshal Craig was also newly added to the memorial wall, ensuring his sacrifice is formally remembered alongside other fallen officers.
