Thank you, Get Real, for setting this initiative in motion, and thank you to all of the Get Real customers who followed through and helped make it happen!
Creating lasting impact in our community doesn’t always have to start with big intentions or grand gestures. When a community comes together and takes small steps to help others, those individual efforts can grow into something that makes a huge difference.
Thank you again for supporting HELP and for showing what can happen when we all do a little bit to help our neighbors. We can’t wait to see how we continue to make a difference together! ❤️

WORD OF THE DAY: COERCION

Sometimes there is technically "a choice".

But what happens if you say no?

Maybe they stop speaking to you.
Threaten to leave.
Threaten to hurt themselves.
Get angry.
Take something away.
Embarrass you.
Keep asking until giving in feels easier than continuing to say no.

Eventually, you might start saying yes before they even have to ask twice.

That is why understanding coercion matters.

Coercion uses pressure, threats, intimidation, or consequences to influence another person’s choices. It can show up around s*x, money, parenting, where someone goes, what they wear, who they see, or everyday decisions.

And sometimes it is subtle enough that the person experiencing it may wonder, "Does this even count?"

A useful question isn’t only, “Did they say yes?”
It is also: “Were they actually free to say no?”

As we continue talking about domestic violence across Wisconsin, we want to give our communities language for experiences that can be difficult to name.

Because sometimes recognizing what is happening begins with finally having a word for it.

Today’s word is coercion.
