The bicyclist was determined to be at fault in the accident that occurred on September 21, 2026, at 08:13 AM at the intersection of Michigan St and S 3rd Avenue in Sturgeon Bay. According to the report, a 52-year-old female driver from Sturgeon Bay was stopped at the stop sign on South 3rd Avenue, preparing to make a right-hand turn to travel east on Michigan Street. At the same time, a 22-year-old female from Brussels was riding an e-bicycle on the south sidewalk of Michigan Street. Spotting another cyclist who had already crossed the street, the 22-year-old accelerated to catch up. The e-bicyclist failed to stop before exiting the sidewalk and entering the crosswalk, riding directly into the path of the turning vehicle.
The collision resulted in minor damage to both the vehicle and the e-bicycle. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured, while the bicyclist was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. She was subsequently released with minor injuries.
The bicyclist was determined to be at fault. No citations were issued, but the officer took time to educate the bicyclist on city and state ordinances regarding bicycle operation and in leu of a citation, the bicyclist was encouraged to use their money to purchase a bicycle helmet.
City of Sturgeon Bay Municipal Code 7.12 ( 8 ) prohibits the riding of bicycles in the downtown area of both the east and west side. Wisconsin State Statute 346.24(2) Crossing at a crosswalk states bicyclists are prohibited from suddenly leaving the sidewalk into the path of a vehicle which is close and difficult for the vehicle operator to yield.
