Tackling some spring cleaning or painting this weekend?

Oil-soaked rags can start a fire if not handled safely. As oil-based paints and stains dry, they give off heat. If rags are piled up or put in a closed container, that heat can build up and start a fire.

Stay safe:
• Lay rags flat to dry outside, away from anything that can burn
• Or place them in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid

On April 10 and 11 the Sturgeon Bay Fire Department hosted a shipboard firefighting review/training.

The class roster included 18 members from Sturgeon Bay Fire, 13 members from Green Bay Metro Fire, 2 members from Marinette Fire, 2 members from Manitowoc Fire, and several members from Fincantieri .
The training consisted of marine terminology, safety considerations, fire control plan interpretation, a review and lessons learned from past vessel fires, establishing water supply, a tour of the Edgar B. Speer, and rescue techniques and considerations for a down firefighter in a high heat, heavy smoke environment.

This training is the first major step in establishing a Northeast Wisconsin Shipboard Firefighting Task Force consisting of Green Bay Metro, Marinette, and Sturgeon Bay. This is a great way for our departments with commercial ship traffic to create a group of highly trained personnel that are familiar with commercial vessels and how to effectively combat a shipboard fire. The intent is to have the ability to use or provide additional resources from/to departments outside of normal mutual aid areas.

This is just a starting point. Once we have established certified training and have revised our MABAS cards to also include task force members, we hope to expand to other local departments.

Many thanks to everyone involved in the planning and ex*****on of this training, and to Fincantieri for arranging access to the shipyard as well as coordinating the use of the Edgar B. Speer.

Spring hose testing at the station.
The Firemen never have a dull moment at the station. They keep you safe, put out your fires, help pick you up if you have fallen, and maintain and test the equipment that they use on a daily to do all those jobs.
Every length of hose at the SBFD is tested annually in-house by the on-duty crew members. That's approximately 17,500 feet of hose!

A day in the life of a Sturgeon Bay Firefighter:

Pump repair on Tender 711; all in house repairs being completed on this project.

Hose testing: Completed inspection and testing of 1500 feet of hose on 4-22-26.

Maintenance prep work: Receiving and organizing supplies for routine maintenance on our apparatus. Did you know that one truck holds 44 quarts of oil? That's about 6 times as much as a normal passenger vehicle!

Training site. No pictures but Marine Travel Lift and Hi-Tech were on site to lift and set a new platform on the third-floor training box which is used to access our rappelling platform. Many thanks to all involved!!

UL annual ladder testing was completed on TRK-724.
