Please remain weather aware as the chance for tornados increases this afternoon. Be extra mindful of the current flooding risk! PLEASE avoid flooded areas, even on the in town streets, driving through water can cause your vehicle to stall and potentially damage your vehicle.

⚠️ TORNADO RISK ADDED FOR SOUTHERN IOWA ⚠️

In its midday Friday update, the Storm Prediction Center has added a 5% tornado probability across portions of southern Iowa for this afternoon and evening. The overall severe weather risk remains a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) across portions of the state, with damaging winds, large hail, and a few tornadoes possible.

The biggest question continues to be how much the atmosphere can recover following this morning’s storms and widespread cloud cover. A boundary is expected to develop somewhere across southern Iowa or near the Iowa/Missouri border, and areas along and south of that boundary could become moderately to strongly unstable by late afternoon.

Thunderstorms are expected to redevelop later this afternoon into the evening, and there will be enough wind shear for organized storms and potentially some initial supercells. The SPC notes that enhanced low-level winds near the boundary could support the tornado threat, particularly across southern Iowa. Damaging winds will also be a concern as storms potentially grow into bowing segments this evening.

Where that boundary ultimately sets up will be important, so we’ll be watching trends closely through the afternoon.
