Be sure to join us on Friday September 18th at 6PM for our free, fun, and family-friendly Turtle Time Program at Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters (2138 Croasdale Road, Stroudsburg, PA 18360). Come see live turtles up close and take part in interactive and hands-on activities with refuge staff and turtle technicians Ella and Karson to learn how we manage and study rare and endangered turtle species right here in the Cherry Valley! This program will take place both indoors and outdoors and involve walking along the paved refuge trail, so please dress for the conditions. Please note that service animals are welcome, but pets are not allowed. No pre-registration is required.

The trails and parking lot at the refuge headquarters will be temporarily closed this coming Saturday September 12th (beginning at 6AM) for the refuge's mentored hunting program orientation class with the Pennsylvania Game Commission- Northeast Region. The trails and parking lot will reopen as normal at 4PM on Saturday September 12th. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Thank you to all who joined us tonight for our August Archery Day Lessons and Open Range Program at Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge. We tried out a new format tonight, using a walk-through archery course with targets of different sizes located at different distances. All the participants tonight did a wonderful job navigating the course, with many bullseyes hit!

We hope to see you at tomorrow night's free and family-friendly archery lessons at our August Archery Day Lessons and Open Range Program at Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge on Friday August 21st at the Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters located at 2138 Croasdale Road, Stroudsburg, PA 18360. Stop by any time between 6-8PM to try out our user-friendly bows and arrows with instruction provided by National Archery in the Schools Program-certified instructors. For those not quite ready for the regular archery, we will also have our kid-friendly inflatable hoverball and stick-it archery kits set up as well. No pre-registration is required.

If you have an interest in learning about harvesting and processing your own food in a safe, ethical, and sustainable manner, please join us for a hunter education course and a series of mentored deer hunts this Fall. Open to those that have little to no prior hunting experience and are at least 12 years old (or 11 years old for the hunter education course), our partners from the Pennsylvania Game Commission- Northeast Region and Pennsylvania Game Commission will provide participants with information and training on safe and ethical hunting (as well as food-related topics of field-dressing and processing) from a team of experienced mentors, including hunters, biologists, and wildlife law enforcement officers. With a break in the rain expected for the next few days, be sure to come out to soak in the beauty of the wildflowers on the refuge! There are many native perennial wildflowers in bloom along the trails right now, with many butterflies and other pollinators paying them a visit!

We had a wonderful time last week doing trail maintenance with the youth from Groundwork Elizabeth and Groundwork Hudson Valley, as well as planting trees in the American Chestnut restoration project area, mulching the pollinator gardens at the Visitor Center, and sampling the Cherry Creek for macroinvertebrates.

The mentored hunt experience at the Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge is all about sustainable food harvesting and teaching participants how to prepare meals for themselves and their families is a big part of the event. Come learn from Refuge Manager Mike Horne and Refuge Law Enforcement Officer McMenamin (pictured here showing participants how to prepare venison jerky) how to make a variety of meals, from venison burgers to steaks to stews to chilli to meat sticks.
