Mustang Spotlight - Mr. Doug Plitt is a member of our District’s Maintenance Department. Mr. Plitt began working for Strongsville City Schools as a bus driver in 2012. He moved to the Maintenance Department in 2018. Mr. Plitt’s wife is also a bus driver and an aide at Chapman Elementary. Prior to working in our District, Mr. Plitt worked in the Maintenance Department at NASA.

“Some say that I’m the most positive guy in our department. It’s really important to me to come to work every day with the right attitude. That definitely contributes to the overall enjoyment of my job. I really like working with our team. It’s a great group of guys who enjoy figuring things out and rising up to problem solve and tackle challenges,” said Mr. Plitt.

“I bring a lot of experience to the Maintenance Department, but I am still learning new things. For example, this year I have been picking up new skills in HVAC. Our team takes a lot of pride in what we do. Much of the work that we accomplish is behind the scenes, but we know it is important work for our District.”

Thank you Mr. Plitt for being part of a team that keeps our District “up and running” on a daily basis.

Mustang Spotlight - Mrs. Melanie Ropchock - or ‘Ms. Melanie’ to her preschool students - has taught in our District for seven years. She is part of our preschool staff at Chapman Elementary School. Ms. Melanie has earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Akron.

“The thing I love most about my job is that I have the opportunity to work with diverse learners. For many students this is their first experience with school and I enjoy watching them practice autonomy so they feel empowered as individuals. My students are kind, inclusive, and flexible. Watching them use language, creativity, and negotiating skills while assigning and taking on roles during dramatic play is inspiring. I appreciate having the opportunity to differentiate instruction and help my students practice resilience by trying again when faced with something new or challenging. I view working with our students as a privilege. I value the importance of our classroom being the first stop on each of their educational journeys,” said Ms. Melanie.

“I enjoy being part of our preschool team. We work together to differentiate instruction, as well as expectations, to ensure we are meeting the needs of all of our learners. We also share the same vision for our students: differences among the students are expected, accepted, accommodated, and celebrated as we all learn and grow together. We understand the impact we have on our students and strive to be role models. This impact is enhanced through the positive partnerships with our preschool families and with the preschool and Chapman staff and communities.”

Thank you Ms. Melanie for building strong foundations in our preschool students and preparing them for kindergarten!

Mustang Spotlight - Mrs. Deb Schnell has been the school nurse at Chapman Elementary School for three years. Mrs. Schnell has a constant smile on her face, even when dealing with students who aren’t feeling 100%. She is also helping to change the “traditional” interactions that students have with the school nurse. “I have students that stop by during the day just to say ‘Hi’ even when they aren’t sick. Recently, some students made me bracelets. It is great that students view me as part of the staff - I love being part of the Chapman family,” says Mrs. Schnell.

She adds, “I truly enjoy waking up and coming to Chapman each day. The strong relationships I have built with teachers, students, and parents make it a great work environment! I am thankful to have the most supportive colleagues in our school.”

Thank you Mrs. Schnell for taking great care of our students at Chapman Elementary!

Mustang Spotlight - Mr. Rich Miltner has been a part of our District for ten years. Mr. Miltner is a Senior Technical Assistant in our Technology Department. He has worked in all of our buildings, and currently spends much of his time assisting the staff and students at Strongsville Middle School. He received his certification and education in computer repair and networking from Lorain County Community College.

“I get great satisfaction in being in a role where I can make a small difference in a student's life. It is great to work with our students and share in their learning and excitement of growing and figuring things out. I love providing support to the students and staff, so that technology can be used to help with the education of our students. I am grateful that I have opportunities to grow and learn new things and then share them with the staff and students here at SCS,” says Mr. Miltner.

He adds, “The best part of working in our Tech Department is working with a team of people that are supportive and always willing to provide their help and experience to accomplish our goals.”

Thank you Mr. Miltner for your continued efforts in helping our students and staff grow, learn, and develop creative ways to utilize technology in the classroom!

This week’s ‘Mustang Spotlight’ focuses on two individuals who co-teach an Algebra I class at Strongsville High School - Mrs. Brittany Sermak and Mrs. Traci Harrison. Mrs. Sermak is a graduate of Strongsville High School (Class of 2007) and has taught at both Albion Middle School and at SHS. Mrs. Harrison has spent her entire time in the District at the high school. Both recognize the impact that they are able to have on students.

“Our students are very hard working, innovative, and eager to learn. I teach mostly freshmen. I love building relationships with my students, beginning their freshman year, and lasting throughout high school and beyond,” says Mrs. Sermak.

“I enjoy working with students to build their confidence in their math abilities. As an Intervention Specialist, I've had the opportunity to co-teach with several math teachers at SHS and all of them have been willing to try new activities and teaching methods. I truly feel like an equal partner in the classroom and the kids also see it that way,” says Mrs. Harrison.

Thank you Mrs. Sermak and Mrs. Harrison for all that you do to make your classroom a great place to learn and grow!
