The Streator Fire Department has added new capabilities to pre-hospital patient care by upgrading our cardiac monitors.

The fire department has placed into service five new Zoll X-Series Advanced Monitors. These replace the previous three cardiac monitors that were purchased in 2018. This upgrade is a major step forward in providing our patients with the most up to date technology to assist withe pre-hospital medical care.

The X-Series Advanced monitors retain the same capabilities of the previous monitors including vital sign monitoring, defibrillation/pacing, and cardiac monitoring and EKGs. Additional features provided by the new Advanced monitors will give our crews additional tools to recognize and treat critical conditions sooner.

The new features include:
- A thermometer probe to continuously monitor patient temperatures. This will help to identify sepsis and other temperature related emergencies and allow for better treatment and ultimately lead to better outcomes
- Advanced respiratory monitoring to ensure providers are providing the right amount of air when breathing for patients
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) monitoring to track data that is pertinent to serious head injuries including both trauma and stroke

Simply put, this upgrade will help EMS providers make faster and more informed decisions when seconds matter most – bringing hospital-level monitoring to your doorstep.

We are fortunate to continue investing in equipment that improves patient care and outcomes for the citizens and visitors of Streator.

A great day for the Streator Fire Department!

Not only did two new firefighters begin their careers but we held our first pinning ceremony! Family, friends, coworkers, and city staff were on hand to formally swear in our two newest Streator Firefighters.

Gio Pappas and Chandler Bedeker both started their careers on February 16, 2026 at the Streator Fire Department. The new hires will undergo 2 weeks of training at the fire department before reporting on March 2nd to the Illinois Fire Service Institute for the seven week Fire Academy.

Gio grew up in Lockport and has his Master's Degree in Psychology from Calumet College of St. Joseph's.

Chandler is a native of Streator and graduated from Streator High School in 2018. He then served in the Marine Corps for 5 years.

Please join us in welcoming Gio and Chandler to the Streator Fire Department!

Last evening at the Streator City Council Committee of the Whole meeting, several commendations were presented by the Streator Fire Department.

To Firefighter William Missel:
Firefighter Missel, while off duty, on two sperate occasions provided CPR to citizens suffering cardiac arrest until EMS arrived. Due to his quick actions, both individuals walked out of the hospital a few days later. On behalf of the City of Streator and the Fire Department, Firefighter Missel was awarded with the Lifesaving Medal.

To Telecommunicator Kiley Tilley:
Kiley is a telecommunicator for Vermillion Valley Dispatch (VCOM). On November 1, 2025 Kiley coached a pregnant female, who had called 911, through the successful delivery of the child prior to the arrival of EMS. Kiley’s calm professionalism in this situation lead to a successful outcome of the emergency. On behalf of the City of Streator and the Fire Department, Telecommunicator Kiley Tilly was awarded with a Baby Delivery Commendation Bar and a Challenge Coin from the Streator Fire Department.

On the morning of January 7, 2025, the Streator Fire Department was dispatched to 43 Staton Place for a structure fire with people trapped. Just prior to the Fire Department’s arrival additional information was provided that the victims were on the second floor of the home. On arrival, the crews found a large amount of smoke and fire visible from the first floor. Crews began placing ladders to the second-floor windows to perform a rescue operation known as vent-enter-search. The residents were quickly located and assisted down a ladder. At the same time crew members began attacking the fire. On behalf of the City of Streator, a Unit Commendation Bar was awarded for the collective highly commendable performance of their duties to:

Captain Fred McClellan
Captain Bryan Park
Captain Tim Redd
Firefighter Billy Missel
Lieutenant Jeff Aredell
Lieutenant Ed Levy

We commend all for their outstanding work!

Ice Rescue Training

The Streator Fire Department conducted ice rescue training this morning at Marilla Park.

A hole was cut in the ice to allow for real life simulation of a rescue. Firefighters were able to refresh rescue skills and properly use ice rescue equipment.

Training remains a staple of the department in order to refresh and sharpen skills.

Streator residents needing a warm place this weekend can go to the Streator Police Department….

Good morning. Due to the cold snap in our area (expected to last at least until next Tuesday), the Streator PD has decided to keep our lobby open from now through Tuesday, January 27 as a warming center for anyone who may need it. We only request that those who may make use of it follow our rules:

1) No smoking.
2) No consuming of any alcoholic beverages.
3) No feet on the table.
4) Keep all conversation respectful and civil.
5) Please throw away all refuse (there is a waste basket in the lobby).

We wish all residents a safe (and warm) weekend.

A special Thank You to VCom!

We always appreciate the voice(s) at the other end of the radio!

Thanks for your help day after day!

I just want to take a moment to recognize the telecommunicators at VCOM. Day and night, 365 days a year, this team consistently shows up to support our community, handling emergencies and stressful situations with steady focus and dependable service.

To the entire VCOM team- You are appreciated. Our community is safer because of you, and I am proud to work alongside such an exceptional group of people.

The attached 2025 VCOM stats offer only a small glimpse into the tremendous amount of work you do behind the scenes.

Thank you,
Director Bohm
