Carter High School, Strawberry Plains, TN Home of the Hornets Carter High School is a public, coeducational college-preparatory grade 9-12 high school. Carter High School originally opened in 1915.

It is located at 210 Carter School Road in the Strawberry Plains area of Knoxville. Strawberry Plains is an unincorporated community near the border of Knox and Jefferson counties. The school is in close proximity of Interstate 40 and Asheville Highway. The school’s current building opened in 1973 and is on a campus adjacent to the original location. Carter is attended by approximately 1,050 stude

nts. Its feeder middle schools are Carter and Holston. Carter is a comprehensive high school. The school offers several Advanced Placement courses. Offered foreign languages include Spanish, French and German. The school also offers numerous vocational courses in career areas ranging from family consumer science and health science to technology engineering and marketing education. Unique to Carter is its Senior Project class. Attended by six to eight seniors, the class essentially functions as the school’s public relations agency. Students produce newsletters for parents and material for media outlets, and create promotional videos that appear on the school’s Web site and in Carter’s in-school video system. Carter’s Business Academy offers classes designed to prepare students for careers in business as well as preparation for collegiate business programs. There are opportunities for job shadowing with local businesses such as KUB and ImagePoint. The Business Academy is funded through a $35,000 federal grant. Carter also has a Freshman Academy designed to help students reach their potential during their transition from middle school to high school. The program was launched in 2006. Carter students participate in sports including baseball, basketball, cheerleading, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Carter’s football team was the Region 1-AAA champ in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The school mascot is the hornet. Carter High School is a comprehensive high school with an instructional program designed to meet the needs of the students in the Carter School community. Successful completion of the vocational program will enable the student to enter the work place or enroll in a post-secondary vocational school. The academic curriculum meets all the requirements for acceptance into the college of the student's choice. We also have an athletic program that compliments the academic program. Okay the date and time is finally confirmed for the 2026 Carter high alumni picnic.
PLEASE READ THIS PART.
IT IS FOR ALL CARTER HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI. THAT MEANS EVERYONE THAT WENT TO CARTER HIGH SCHOOL.
The date is Saturday May 23rd from 6pm to 8pm at the Carter Pool.
We moved the picnic to earlier in the year so it wouldn't be so hot.
Hamburgers and hotdogs will be provided so bring your favorite side dish to share.
I am really looking forward to this year's picnic so please come out and fellowship with other Carter alumni.

The 3rd annual Carter High School Foundation Gala is just under 3 weeks away! If you see one of these signs around the community, you can scan the QR code and buy your tickets! We will once again have a finger foods buffet provided by Embassy Suites, a live auction of several items, and a ton of good times and fun! Join us on Thursday, April 10th as we raise money to support the students and staff of Carter High School!
