On Wednesday morning, three recruits from Salem Fire Department & Emergency Management and Winthrop Fire Department were traveling through Weston en route to the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy when they encountered an unresponsive cyclist in the roadway. They immediately stopped to call 9-1-1 and render aid. As the patient's condition deteriorated, they initiated CPR and continued lifesaving efforts until Weston Fire Dept personnel arrived and took over patient care. By the time the patient was loaded onto a MedFlight helicopter, a pulse had been restored.

Sometimes in life, you are the only person who can help. Whether you choose to, and whether you can meet that moment under pressure, depends on your character, training, and guts. Weston Fire Chief Justin Woodside came to the Academy that afternoon to recognize Recruits Colby Boulay of Salem FD, Harry Benson of Winthrop FD, and Adam Lundberg of Winthrop FD for their instinctive efforts to help and their performance when it mattered most.

EDIT: Wow, this generated a lot of comments. To answer a few of the suggestions, the items weren't sausages or Slim Jims. They weren't pickled beets, pickled kielbasa, or pickled ... pickles. They weren't road flares or fireworks. JHIRT techs, like all firefighters, will risk a lot to save a lot and will go to great lengths to meter and assess an unknown hazard -- but they generally don't take a bite out of weird stuff that's been in a jar for who knows how long.

A resident recently dropped off this jar containing unknown bright red cylinders during an event at the Massachusetts State Police barracks in . In an abundance of caution, the DFS Joint Hazard Incident Response Team was requested to assess it for hazards. JHIRT brings extensive experience with reactive and energetic substances, and they gave it the all-clear.
