Date: Thursday, September 10, 2026
Sleeper Stoutland Volunteer Fire Department responds to 30+ acre natural cover fire threatening a structure.

Stoutland, Missouri — On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at approximately 1:26 p.m., the Sleeper Stoutland Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched by Laclede County Central Dispatch to a reported natural cover fire with a structure in danger in the 29000 block of Starling Drive in Laclede County.

While responding, Sleeper Stoutland and Lebanon Fire Department crews observed a medium-sized column of smoke coming from the area. Based on the prevailing fire conditions, assistance was immediately requested from Eldridge Fire And Rescue Dept, Hazelgreen Fire Protection District, and Tri-County Fire Protection District for additional brush trucks and engines.

Lebanon City Fire and Sleeper Stoutland VFD arrived on scene and found approximately fifteen acres actively burning in a wooded area near a residence. Due to the immediate threat to the residence, Command requested crews begin structure protection.

Additional resources were requested by SSVFD Fire Chief and Incident Commander James Vaughn. The following districts/departments sent brush crews, trucks, engines, and/or tankers: Mid-County Fire Protection District, St. Robert Fire and Rescue, Bennett Spring Fire Protection District , Waynesville Rural Fire Protection District, Nebo/ Falcon Fire Protection District, Northwest Fire Protection District - Camden County, MO , and Crocker Fire Protection District. Mercy Emergency Medical Services was also activated for fire standby on scene.

Firefighters quickly attacked the portion of the fire advancing through the woods and later near the residence and were able to prevent any structural involvement. No structures were lost.
The fire was brought under control and command was terminated at approximately 5:32 p.m.

The Sleeper Stoutland Volunteer Fire Department is highly appreciative of the coordination and teamwork of the many agencies involved in the incident, as well as the care and safety of the residents.

Stoutland, Missouri — On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at approximately 1:42 p.m., the Sleeper Stoutland Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched by Laclede County Central Dispatch to a reported natural cover fire with multiple vehicles, structures, and cattle in danger in the 29000 block of Starling Drive in Laclede County.

While responding, Sleeper Stoutland and Lebanon City Fire crews observed a large, widespread column of smoke coming from the area. Based on the prevailing fire conditions, assistance was immediately requested from Lebanon Rural Fire Protection District, Eldridge Fire And Rescue Dept, Hazelgreen Fire Protection District, and Tri-County Fire Protection District for additional brush trucks and engines.

Lebanon Fire Department and Sleeper Stoutland VFD arrived on scene and found approximately fifteen acres actively burning with the fire rapidly advancing toward a nearby wooded area. At one point the wind changed direction and began pushing the fire toward a residence and a hay barn. Due to the immediate threat to the residence and barn, Command requested crews begin structure protection.

Additional resources were requested by SSVFD Fire Chief and Incident Commander James Vaughn by activating Region I Fire Mutual Aid. Upon activation, the following districts/departments sent brush crews, trucks, engines, and/or tankers: Mid-County Fire Protection District, St. Robert Fire and Rescue, Bennett Spring Fire Protection District, Strafford FPD , Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District, Waynesville Rural Fire Protection District, Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District, Nebo/ Falcon Fire Protection District, Northwest Fire Protection District - Camden County, MO, Rolla Rural FPD, Southwest Camden County Fire Protection District, Gravois Fire Protection District, Logan-Rogersville FPD, and Rolla City FPD . Mercy Emergency Medical Services was also activated for fire standby on scene.

Firefighters quickly attacked the portion of the fire advancing toward the woods and later the residence and barn and were able to prevent any structural involvement. No structures were lost.

Due to the sheer number of fire department personnel on scene assisting with firefighting efforts, the American Red Cross was requested for fire ground support, providing food and bottled water to the crews.

The fire was brought under control and command was terminated at approximately 8:00 p.m.

During the incident, Osage Beach Fire Protection District was providing coverage for all of Laclede County.

The Sleeper Stoutland Volunteer Fire Department is highly appreciative of the coordination and teamwork of the many agencies involved in the incident, as well as the care and safety of the residents.
