As the weather warms up, the cover crops will be greening up. The winter hardy species are coming out of their dormant stage, so be on the look out for some green fields! Some species you may see include cereal rye, triticale, and winter wheat.
As you may know, cover crops reduce soil erosion, utilize excess soil nutrients, suppress weeds, minimize soil compaction, increase soil organic matter, improve soil moisture efficiency, and improve overall soil health. Cover crops increase surface cover, anchor corn and soybean residues, increase water infiltration, and reduce compaction. Many of these benefits can be seen within the first year of implementation.
