WEATHER UPDATE – STORM LAKE AREA

⚠️ This Afternoon & Evening
Isolated thunderstorms are possible across northwest Iowa later this afternoon. While storms will be isolated, any storm that develops could produce:

• Hail up to quarter size
• Wind gusts up to 60 mph
• Brief heavy rainfall and lightning

🌦️ Sunday into Monday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible Sunday afternoon through Monday. At this time, severe weather is not expected.

🌡️ Heat Returns Next Week
A significant warming trend is expected through next week, with temperatures climbing into the 90s and potentially reaching 100°F in some locations.

Expected hottest days:
• Wednesday
• Thursday

As temperatures rise, remember to:
✅ Stay hydrated
✅ Limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat
✅ Check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable individuals
✅ Never leave children or pets in vehicles

Check out this video by Firefighter Daniel Ramirez from our live fire evolutions on Tuesday. This is a great illustration of how quickly visibility can drop to zero in fire conditions due to heavy smoke. When visibility is lost, firefighters rely on extensive training, teamwork, communication, and orientation techniques to safely navigate and locate the fire.

Training like this is critical to ensuring our crews are prepared for real-world incidents and able to operate safely in dangerous environments.

As temperatures rise, it’s important to take steps to stay safe and avoid heat-related illnesses. Your safety is our priority!

💧 Drink plenty of water — even if you don’t feel thirsty
🧢 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing
🏠 Take breaks in the shade or air conditioning
🚗 Never leave children or pets in a vehicle
🌞 Limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat
👴 Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and those without A/C
🐶 Make sure pets have shade and fresh water
⚠️ Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke
🚨 Signs of heat illness may include:
• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Heavy sweating
• Headache
• Confusion
• Rapid pulse

If someone shows signs of heat stroke, call 911 immediately.

🚨 NOTICE 🚨 THIS HAS CONCLUDED

This evening starting at 6pm, you may see or smell smoke in the area of 221 Memorial Road (old water treatment plant location). This smoke is NOT due to an active emergency. Storm Lake Fire Department staff will be conducting live fire training burn evolutions in our training burn cell.

Training like this allows our firefighters to gain valuable hands-on experience in a controlled environment, helping ensure we are prepared to safely and effectively respond when real emergencies occur.

As we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country this Memorial Day weekend, your Storm Lake Fire Department encourages everyone to celebrate safely.

🚒 Memorial Day Weekend Safety Tips:
🔥 Never leave grills, fire pits, or campfires unattended
🔥 Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from grills and open flames
🔥 Fully extinguish campfires before leaving the area
🔥 Never drink and drive — plan for a safe ride home
🔥 Stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts
🔥 Wear life jackets while boating or near water
🔥 Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the heat

Importance of Fire Prevention 🚒🧯

Recently Storm Lake Fire Department was dispatched to a possible fire in a structure that was believed to be extinguished. Upon arrival, crews found that an employee had successfully extinguished the fire using a fire extinguisher prior to our arrival, preventing what could have been significant damage to the structure and contents.

Quick action, awareness, and having the proper fire protection equipment available made all the difference in this incident. Great job by everyone involved!

This serves as an important reminder of the value of fire prevention, employee training, and knowing how to properly use a fire extinguisher in the early stages of a fire.
