A brief break in the heaviest rain is underway this morning across Northern California, though light to moderate rain will continue through the day. Rain intensity is expected to increase again on Tuesday evening. Christmas Eve through the day after Christmas will bring significant mountain travel impacts. Conditions trend much drier by Saturday.

In Southern California, a Flood Watch will go into effect late Tuesday and remain in place through Wednesday. Heavy rainfall may lead to flooding of rivers and other low-lying areas, with mud and debris flows possible in mountainous regions near recent burn scars.

If traveling during this period, check road conditions frequently and allow extra time. Avoid driving through flooded roadways, as water depth may be difficult to judge. Mountain travelers should be prepared for chain controls, reduced visibility, and possible road closures. Consider delaying non-essential travel during peak impacts.
