Join the wool brigade!

Pull up a chair & learn how knitting clubs formed throughout the United States to help soldiers during World War I.

Already a knitter? Bring your own project and join us from some knitting. We're not 'knit'-picky -- other needle-crafters are welcome, too! We'll also have some supplies available if you want to try you hand at knitting or crocheting.

We'll be at the farm 10am to 2pm knitting and chatting. Feel free to stop by anytime to learn, talk or just enjoy the farm.

Happy !

For this we are actually advertising for an event that is NOT at the farm *gasp*

Tomorrow, our own Ranger Emily will be leading Fishing with a Ranger to celebrate Free Fishing Day in Texas! Our park will provide poles and bait while supplies last, and no fishing license is required. We even have kid sized poles, so bring the little ones!

We hope to see y'all there 🐟

(Be sure to check in at the visitor center before heading over to the fishing program)

Peek into the tank house at the Sauer-Beckmann Farm and you might spot this machine pictured here. What looks like an upside-down wooden bucket with legs and a lever on top is actually an early version of a washing machine!

Before the invention of the washing machine, doing a family’s laundry took an entire day of backbreaking work that severely dried out your hands with all the scrubbing and wringing. But with this machine, washing a few items of clothing took only 3-4 hours of cranking a handle. Now it may seem like too much work for our modern selves today, but this was a game changer at the turn of the 20th century!

Oh, and did we mention that this machine only cost $2.50 in the 1897 Sears-Roebuck catalogue? What a deal!

(PS- in 2026, that’s about $110.13)

With over 300 visitors in attendance and the help of 24 volunteers, From Sheep to Shawl was a huge success!

We cannot express enough of our gratitude to the staff, volunteers, and visitors for showing up and making this event happen. The entire day was filled with energy and excitement as everyone got to learn the journey of processing wool.

Special thanks to Emily McCorkle for leading the hand shearing demo, and special thanks to the members of the Fredericksburg Spinning Guild for leading the fiber demos. We had lots of other volunteers and staff who came together for this event, and these photos are just a tiny window into the work they did.

Didn't get to attend From Sheep to Shawl? Don't worry, we have a FB livestream video you can watch! Join Ranger Amber in a 30-minute walk through of the event. This video will be available on the Sauer-Beckmann Farm page until June 15th, 2026.
