Another Junior Ranger Angler fishing event, Father’s Day Fishing, is around the corner next Saturday, June 20, 9am-12pm (the day before Father’s Day)!

Bring your dad, grand-dad, uncle, brother, or favorite dad proxy along for a fun filled morning of fishing on a local pond! Join the Arabia Alliance Rangers as we learn the fine art of fishing! We’ll learn about bait and casting as we try our hand at catching some fish.

The event is free for children of all ages and their adults. We will provide rod and reel for your use. If you have your own fishing equipment, please bring it along!

On Saturday, Alliance staff Jeff Dingler and Brigette Jones, co-authors of Images of America: Arabia Mountain NHA, lead a reading and Walk & Talk at the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve and highlighted some historic features in the preserve that were featured in the book. Attendees saw old train beds, plug and feather pins still stuck in the outcrop, the old quarry office and, perhaps coolest of all, the ruins of the boiler room for the central power plant, that provided steam engine to drills cutting down raw stone from the outcrop. Thanks to all that joined!

The next local reading of our new book will take place at the Stonecrest Library on Saturday, July 18, 11am-1pm. Stay tuned!

“History In Your Hands!”

It’s that time of the year again to share you and your family’s history for Juneteenth! Please join us for our 4th Annual Juneteenth Storytelling Festival at Bruce Street. This year’s theme is History In Your Hands, featuring virtual keynote speaker, former mayor of Chapel Hill, NC and Bruce Street School alum Howard Lee.

Last year, we asked locals to bring their old family photos and historic images to potentially be included in a book about the Heritage Area. This year, thanks to your contributions, we’ll be talking about and selling this new book, Images of America: Arabia Mountain NHA. Our keynote speaker Howard Lee will also read from his memoir, The Courage to Lead, about growing up in lithonia and going to the stone Bruce Street School during the height of Jim Crow and the Klan.

Tomorrow, meet us at the Nature Preserve for an Arabia Reads Walk & Talk presentation of our new photographic history book, Images of America: Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area.

Come see some of the actual historic sites revealed in the book with co-authors Brigette Jones and Jeff Dingler. After a discussion and signing session, Jones and Dingler will lead a one-hour Walk & Talk around the preserve identifying some of the key historical areas shown in the book.

An eastern box turtle preparing to lay eggs near the PATH?

An eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina) was seen digging up dirt next to the Arabia Mountain PATH, likely to prepare it for egg laying. Eastern box turtles lay a single clutch of eggs annually, usually consisting of 3-8 eggs, in a shallow hole in the ground. They then cover the eggs up with dirt to hide them until they hatch.

The s*x of the hatchlings is set by the temperature of the nest and eggs, with warmer temperatures producing females and cooler temperatures producing males. This process, called Temperature Dependent S*x Determination, occurs in many reptiles and most turtle species.
