Board Member Diijon DaCosta

Creating a Positive Environment for a Better DeKalb. Mr. Diijon DaCosta is a DeKalb County resident who graduated from Redan High School.

He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Kennesaw State University (KSU) in Sociology, with a concentration in Criminology. While attending KSU, Diijon served as a charter member to establish Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. on the university’s campus. In 2014, he joined the DeKalb County School District as an educator, before moving on to serve in the county’s Department of Human Resources. Diijon DaC

osta founded DeKalb Kids Project, Inc. (DKP), a nonprofit organization that focuses on emphasizing the importance of academic success and leadership amongst the youth of DeKalb County. The organization also incorporates community service, mentorship, and various outreach events. Diijon DaCosta’s accomplishments include:

Diijon is a father, educator, mentor, motivational speaker, activist, and community leader. While his passion for education is a top priority, his natural ability to influence the minds of the youth for the betterment of his community speaks volumes. He eagerly embraces and promotes innovation and change. A core message that Diijon often stresses with youth is, “The way you dress, will be the way you are addressed. Once you change your mind, everything around you will also change.” He not only strives to practice this philosophy, but he actively applies and promotes these characteristics throughout his life. DaCosta’s primary goal of service is to advance the DeKalb County community and to improve the lives of our youth. He has made a commitment to affect this change through being vigorously active in education, community engagement, and youth empowerment.

Back on my old stomping grounds at the DeKalb Alternative Program. This visit was personal for me because this is a place I know well, and it was good to return and see the work continuing for scholars who may need a different path, additional structure, and another opportunity to move forward.

DAP plays an important role in helping scholars reset, refocus, and prepare for their next chapter. I appreciated reconnecting with the staff and seeing the commitment they continue to show our scholars every day.

School: DeKalb Early College Academy (DECA)

I really enjoyed my visit with the DECA Knights. DECA continues to stand out as DeKalb’s only early college model high school, giving scholars the opportunity to earn their high school diploma while also completing college coursework through Georgia State University at Perimeter College.

The achievements speak for themselves. DECA is a National Blue Ribbon School, has earned Georgia School of Excellence recognition, and continues to maintain a strong tradition of academic excellence. Scholars can graduate with at least 30 college credit hours, with many choosing to go beyond that. DECA also earned 3rd place in the 2026 DeKalb Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl High School competition.

I appreciated seeing a school where college readiness is not just talked about, it is built directly into the experience.

Elizabeth Andrews High School has a very important mission in our district: providing scholars with flexible pathways, additional support, and opportunities to stay on track toward graduation. I appreciated learning more about how the school meets students where they are and creates another avenue for them to finish strong.

I also had the opportunity to meet members of the FLEX Academy team and learn more about the work they are doing to expand access and support for scholars across DeKalb.

I really enjoyed my time at Stone Mountain High School, The Rock. This is one of those schools where you can feel the culture as soon as you walk through the doors. I had a chance to talk with scholars, see the diversity of the student body, and experience the pride surrounding ROTC, academics, athletics, and the many different programs that make Stone Mountain unique.

I also want to recognize Mr. Lester Wright for the way he helps tell the school’s story through social media. The energy online matches what I saw in person. More importantly, I want to thank the entire staff. The relationships, pride, and commitment to scholars were evident throughout the building.

I left Stone Mountain High School with an even greater appreciation for the people who make The Rock what it is.

School: Stephenson High School

There is something special about the culture at Stephenson High School. I was joined by State Representative Venola Mason, House District 94, and representatives from Commissioner Dr. LaDena Bolton’s Super District 7 office as we visited classrooms and connected with scholars and staff.

One of the things that stood out most was learning that approximately 23 members of the Stephenson staff are alumni of the school. That says a lot about Jaguar pride. Scholars graduate, build their careers, and then return home to pour back into the next generation.

Thank you to Dr. Sackey and the entire Stephenson family for allowing us to experience the culture firsthand.

A great visit at Freedom Middle School. I enjoyed connecting with scholars, visiting classrooms, and seeing the pride throughout the building.

I enjoyed my visit to Rockbridge Elementary and the opportunity to see scholars engaged in learning throughout the building. Rockbridge’s French Dual Language Immersion Program is one of the many opportunities helping scholars expand their learning beyond the traditional classroom experience.

A special thank you to the teachers and entire support staff who show up every day to teach, encourage, care for, and support our scholars. The work you do behind the scenes and in the classroom makes a difference.

A great visit at Idlewood Elementary alongside Interim Superintendent Dr. Norman C. Sauce III. We had an opportunity to walk the building, connect with scholars and staff, and talk about the major renovation and building refresh that will bring much-needed improvements to the Idlewood community.

It was exciting to see what is happening now while also looking ahead to what is coming next for our Mustangs.
