The summer season is always one of the busiest times of the year in Stone Harbor, and 2026 was no exception.
From June 1 through August 31, the Stone Harbor Fire Department responded to 688 Fire and EMS incidents:
319 Fire Responses — up 37 calls from 2025
369 EMS Responses
29 Structure/Building Fires
91 Fire Alarms
110 EMS Assists
20 Natural Gas Leaks
12 Motor Vehicle Accidents
10 Carbon Monoxide Alarms
9 Watercraft Rescues
9 Cooking Fires
Our members also responded to elevator rescues, medevacs, surf and water rescues, brush fires, a boat fire, arcing wires, fuel spills, smoke investigations, and numerous other emergencies.
688 responses in just 92 days averages nearly 7.5 Fire and EMS responses every day.
Behind every one of these responses are our career and volunteer firefighters and EMTs who remained ready to respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the summer.

The Stone Harbor Volunteer Fire Company regrets to announce the passing of Past Chief Herschel R. "Pidge" McClure.

Chief McClure joined the Stone Harbor Volunteer Fire Company in 1957 and proudly served as Fire Chief from 1971 to 1977. Throughout his years of service, he demonstrated a deep commitment to Stone Harbor and helped to shape the department to what is it today.

We are grateful for his many years of dedication and service to Stone Harbor. His legacy will not be forgotten.

Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the McClure family and all who knew and loved Pidge during this difficult time.

On Monday, July 21, at 6:00 p.m., Station 13 was dispatched to assist the Avalon Fire Department (Station 11) with a structure fire at 176 61st Street.

Despite severe thunderstorms moving through the area, Quint 13 responded and assisted Avalon firefighters with fire suppression operations.

We would like to thank Tanker 70 for providing station coverage while our crews were committed to the incident.

Strong mutual aid partnerships ensure our communities receive the highest level of service, no matter the weather. Thank you to all responding agencies for their teamwork and professionalism.

Christmas in July at the Stone Harbor Fire Department!

We're excited to announce a new partnership with Kohler's Bakery in Avalon!

Beginning this Saturday, July 25, Kohler's will be hosting a Pop-Up Doughnut Shop at the Stone Harbor Fire Department from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM. They'll be set up under our tent (where we sell our department T-shirts), making it easy to stop by for your favorite fresh doughnuts.

Even better, 20% of all sales will be donated back to the Stone Harbor Fire Department and our Career Firefighters, helping support the men and women who serve our community.

This is planned to be an every-other-Saturday event, so we hope you'll make it part of your weekend tradition!

Early this morning, Thursday, July 16, at 2:44 a.m., the Stone Harbor Fire Department was dispatched to a first-alarm structure fire at 10627 Golden Gate Road.

Quint 13, under the command of Captain Robert McClure Jr., arrived to find the rear deck of the building heavily involved in fire. Firefighters from Quint 13, working alongside Avalon Engine 11, quickly brought the fire under control and extinguished it, preventing further extension.

A special thank you to Engine 70 for standing by at Station 13 to provide coverage while our crews operated at the scene.

On Sunday, July 12, at 1:09 p.m., Fireboat 13 was dispatched to assist the Avalon Fire Department with a boat fire in the Intracoastal Waterway.

Upon arrival, Fireboat 13 worked alongside Fireboat 11 to extinguish the fire and bring the incident under control. Thanks to the quick response of all agencies involved, every occupant aboard the vessel was safely rescued, and no injuries were reported.

The Stone Harbor Fire Department is proud to work alongside our mutual aid partners to protect our waterways and keep our communities safe.

Congratulations to Our Newly Promoted Captains and New Full-Time Firefighter!
At the July 7 Borough Council meeting, the Stone Harbor Fire Department proudly celebrated an important milestone as four members were promoted to the rank of Captain and one firefighter was sworn in as our newest full-time firefighter.

Donald Fancher
Mike Gihorski
These four firefighters were among the original members who helped build our paid combination fire department. Through years of dedication, training, leadership, and service, they have earned the respect of their fellow firefighters and our community. We are confident they will continue to lead our department with professionalism and integrity.
We also congratulate Louis Taylor III on being sworn in as a full-time firefighter. Louis comes from a family with deep roots in Stone Harbor and a long tradition of serving our Borough. We are excited to welcome him to our career staff and look forward to his future with the department.
The Stone Harbor Fire Department extends its sincere appreciation to Mayor Tim Carney and the Borough Council for their continued support of our department and for their confidence in these outstanding firefighters.
Congratulations to all five members and their families on this well-deserved achievement. We are proud of each of you and thank you for your continued commitment to protecting the residents and visitors of Stone Harbor.

On June 21st at 8:23 PM, Quint 13 and Engine 13 were dispatched to assist the Avalon Fire Department with a structure fire at 242 6th Street in Avalon.

Stone Harbor firefighters responded as part of the mutual aid assignment and assisted Avalon crews with fire suppression operations. Mutual aid partnerships between neighboring departments are critical to ensuring a rapid and effective response to emergencies throughout our communities.

We all know that the cost of everyday life continues to rise, and fire departments are facing the same challenges.

The graphic below illustrates just how much the cost of equipping a single firefighter has increased over the years. From protective clothing and helmets to breathing apparatus and safety equipment, these essential items are required to keep our firefighters safe while protecting our community.

Unfortunately, we have no control over these increasing costs. What we can control is our commitment to providing our firefighters with the training and equipment they need to respond safely and effectively when our residents and visitors need us most.

We appreciate the continued support of our community as we work to meet these challenges and maintain the high level of service that Stone Harbor has come to expect from its fire department.
