Today the Board of of Supervisors honored our longest serving trustee, Raymond McCray, as he has decided to retire from the Board of Retirement.

Mr. McCray served on the SJCERA Board of Retirement for 36 years. Since his appointment in 1990, he has seen the fund grow from $480 million to $5.6 billion, in large part thanks to his wealth of financial experience.

In addition to serving on our Board , he has held various leadership positions with the State Association of County Retirement Systems (SACRS) where he cultivated a passion for trustee education.

The SJCERA Board of Retirement and staff wish to thank Mr. McCray for his service and dedication to the employees of San Joaquin County.

Celebrating 80 years of dedicated service! 🎉 We are honored that SJCERA’s 80th Anniversary was recognized by the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors, marking eight decades of commitment to serving the retirement security of public employees and retirees from our ten employers.

Of course, we dedicate this moment to our incredible members - retirees, deferred, and active alike - for trusting us in being the best version of ourselves. While 80 years have passed, our purpose remains the same: to provide a secure retirement.

Here's to continuing our mission for generations to come!

Sergeant Jason Whelen served as a voice for all members of SJCERA. He first joined our Board of Retirement back in 2025 and held a true passion for the financial wellness of the people who served San Joaquin County.

Our hearts are with the Whelen family, his colleagues at the Sheriff's Office, and the community he loved.

He will be truly missed.

It is with deep sorrow that the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of Sergeant Jason Whelen, who suffered a medical emergency while on duty on Tuesday, February 24th.

Despite the immediate response and extensive life-saving efforts by fellow deputies and medical personnel, Sergeant Whelen tragically passed away.

Sergeant Whelen began his career with the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office on October 15, 2007. Through his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to service, he was promoted to Sergeant on February 25, 2013. Throughout his career, he served this community with honor, integrity, and compassion.

Sergeant Whelen was a proud husband and devoted father of four. He was known within the Sheriff’s Office for his kindness, steady leadership, love of Jesus Christ, and infectious smile. He brought positivity to those around him and was someone who could always be counted on.

Our thoughts are with Sergeant Whelen’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. The Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of a respected leader, a valued partner, and a cherished member of our law enforcement family.

We ask the community to keep his loved ones and our Sheriff’s Office family in your thoughts.
