What a great day of fun and learning at the new Wonderworks STEM Academy! 🔬

In groups named after the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, students went to different activities, from using micro:bit mini-computers to studying earthworms to making “sun prints,” ☀️ or works of art made by pressing plant clippings onto photo sensitive paper in the sun.

The day of fun exploration last week was designed by the SJCOE STEM Programs team to instill a sense awe and wonder ✨ in the world to inspire students to keep exploring. 🚀

The free camp also supports the department’s goal of increasing opportunities for STEM education in the region.

More photos from the Ninth Annual H2O Hackathon!

Teams from high schools and colleges competed in the Ninth Annual H2O Hackathon coding competition at the SJCOE on May 2, racing to design an app to help local communities better understand California’s water supply. In a second category, teams created engaging multimedia campaigns highlighting the importance of staying informed about the state’s ever-changing water situation.

In all, approximately 200 high school and college students and their coaches on 60 teams competed. Cash scholarships were awarded to nine winning teams. The Code Busters team from Ripon High School (Ripon Unified School District) was awarded the California Water Service Company (Cal Water) Golden Spigot Award and a $5,000 scholarship. Winners were selected by a panel of judges including water experts and coding professionals.

The H₂O Hackathon is a community-supported event that taps into the technological, creative, problem-solving, and presentation skills of local students to find solutions for the state's water issues. Find more information at h2ohackathon.org.

See you next year!

Culture, art, nature, and shared humanity were celebrated at the Art and Heritage Festival at the SJCOE’s Durham Ferry Outdoor Education Center. 🎨🌳

Students and community groups danced, made music, and shared their stories in live performances. Local artists from schools and the community led hands-on activities. At one station, the community finished painting artistic designs on garden posts that will be permanent fixtures at Durham Ferry.

The festival also marked the culmination of a series of community events funded through Arts in California Parks. Guided by artistic team Watershed Sculpture, students and community members worked together to build a living sculpture.

The Willow Loop at Lizards’ Lair is an 85-foot-long work of art incorporating natural materials and living willows. It will evolve and endure for years to come as both a habitat for animals and an inspiring symbol of the community coming together with nature to create something lasting and beautiful.

🌟 Thank you to our partners California State Parks, Cal Arts Council, and Parks California for their support!
