More than 75% of our primary response area does not have fire hydrants. Stillwater Fire Engineers and Firefighters conducted a water supply operations exercise simulating a response to an area without fire hydrants.
Structure fires in these locations require water to be transported to the emergency scene. This situation often involves water tenders (tankers), portable drop tanks, and drafting.
Drafting is a crucial firefighting technique used when access to fire hydrants is limited or unavailable - especially in rural areas. Firefighters use large, hard suction hoses and a water pump to draw water from a dump tank under negative pressure (to generate a vacuum) to the fire engine.
It is always essential to establish a secure, efficient water supply and deliver water to the fire attack crew, regardless of whether hydrants are available nearby.
