As summer approaches, conserving water becomes especially important. Warmer temperatures, limited rainfall, and increased outdoor water use can strain local water supplies. By making small adjustments at home and in our daily routines, residents can help protect this valuable resource while also reducing utility costs.
One of the most effective ways to conserve water during the summer months is to water lawns and gardens wisely.
• Water early in the morning before 10 am or later in the evening after 5 pm to reduce evaporation.
• Automatic irrigation systems should be adjusted accordingly, and state law requires that all new irrigation systems include rain sensors so the system shuts off when it is raining.
• Residents and businesses must also follow the City’s odd/even watering schedule from June 1 to October 1.
Inside the home, simple habits make a big difference.
• Turn off the tap while brushing teeth, shaving or washing dishes.
• Fixing leaking faucets, pipes, and toilets promptly can save hundreds of gallons of water each month.
• Maximize efficiency by running the dishwasher and washing machine with full loads.
Residents can also consider planting native or drought-tolerant plants that require less watering and maintenance. Applying mulch around trees and garden beds helps retain soil moisture and reduces the need for frequent watering while also being a great suppressant for unwanted weeds.
