Congratulations to Shelby Sumner, a PhD student in Agricultural Economics, for winning first place in the GSS/C-Fare Policy Communication Competition at the 2026 Agriculture and Applied Economics Association Conference!

Shelby’s presentation explored the economics of delaying New World Screwworm through temporary border closures. Rather than asking whether these policies completely prevented the disease, she examined how the time created by these measures allowed for increased preparedness and why that “bought time” can have significant economic value when developing animal disease policies.

The department recently hosted its decades-long tradition of Ready Set Sell, where professional salespeople visit campus to participate in a sales role-play activity. This semester, 2015 Agricultural Economics graduate Terra Burditt (left) traveled from Nebraska to share her experience with the students by pretending to be a customer and allowing students (left to right) Liv Atendido, Ryland Mosley, and Brady Hopkins to perform a mock sales call. Twenty-two salespeople participated, helping fund the banquet afterwards and providing our students with an active and unique learning activity.
