The Washington County Sheriff's Office partners with Learning for Life to teach young adults in our community about law enforcement, it also gives them the structure and resources they need to make ethical choices and reach their full potential. The Washington County Explorers aim to make a difference in their communities in a variety of ways. Recently they conducted their annual roadside clean-up of County Road 61, between 120th Street and Myeron Road in Stillwater Township as part of the Adopt-a-Highway program. They were able to fill four full bags of collected trash and leave the roadway cleaner than they found it. The Sheriff’s Office is always seeking to add to our Explorer Program. Outdoor warning sirens alert communities to imminent severe weather and are designed to be heard outside. So, what should you do if you hear these sirens?

• Seek shelter immediately.
• Stay tuned to trusted sources (National Weather Service Website, NOAA weather radio, and local radio or television stations).

It is important to note that:
• Washington County does not issue an “all-clear” tone from the outdoor warning sirens.
• Sirens run for three minutes then stop, but the threat does not end when the siren ends.
• The outdoor warning siren system is tested by activating all sirens in the county at 1:00 PM, on the first Wednesday of the month, March through October.

Deputy Tristan Mirovsky had a wonderful time joining South Washington County Schools for its annual kickoff event this week to welcome staff back and celebrate the start of a new school year!

Thousands of teachers and school staff gathered for the event, along with local business and community organizations. Congratulations, Lieutenant Nicholas Klinkner, on 20 years of service!

In 2006, Lt. Klinkner joined the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and worked his way through the ranks from correctional officer to corporal, correctional sergeant and now lieutenant in our Jail Division.

Before joining the Sheriff’s Office, he served eight years in the Minnesota Army National Guard, including deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. He's built a career on service and credits the support he's received from his leadership for helping make that possible.

We're grateful for all you've done and continue to do for the Sheriff's Office and our community!

Sheriff Starry is proud to announce that the Washington County Sheriff’s Office will once again be actively supporting the next generation of peace officers and law enforcement personnel, by participating in the Law Enforcement Scholarship Program, sponsored by the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association (MSA).
The MSA Board of Directors has established a scholarship fund which has the privilege of awarding up to eighteen $2,000 scholarships in 2026. These scholarships are made possible by the coordinated efforts of all 87 elected Sheriffs of the state of Minnesota.
The MSA recognizes the importance of pre-entry training for people considering law enforcement as their career choice. Last year our very own Community Service Officer Oliver Jacobson was selected as a scholarship recipient. When asked why he wants to become a Law Enforcement Officer, CSO Jacobson responded, “I feel that I can make a meaningful impact in my community by building good relationships with community members and by keeping the area safe. I feel that becoming a Law Enforcement Officer is one of the most effective ways for me to achieve those goals.”
The MSA acknowledges that some students may need outside help in meeting the costs of training, even though they excel academically. The MSA Scholarship Committee, in making its selection of awards, intends to achieve representation from all geographical areas of the state. The scholarship deadline is November 30th, 2026. Awards will be announced on the MSA web page and on social media at the start of 2027. Application forms and a statement of procedures are available at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Records window. Scholarships are only available to students currently enrolled in one of the following three categories:

1. Mandated POST Skills Program
2. In their second year of a two-year law enforcement program.
3. In their third or fourth year of a four-year college criminal justice program.

To qualify, students must have completed at least one year of the two-year program or two years of a four-year program. Students meeting these criteria are invited to obtain a scholarship application form from their local sheriff’s office or online at www.mnsheriffs.org

If there’s an imminent threat in Washington County, how will you know?

That’s where IPAWS comes in. The Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) helps Washington County send emergency and life-saving information to people in the affected and surrounding areas. No sign-up required. Alerts can reach you through Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on cell phones, Emergency Alert System (EAS) messages via television and radio stations, and messages to NOAA weather radios.

Since 2004, FEMA has recognized September as a time to encourage everyone to prepare for emergencies and disasters. Throughout the month, Washington County Emergency Management will be sharing simple tips and information to help you and your family be better prepared.
