Search and Rescue Missions Continue to Decrease in the Months of April and May

06/02/2026 – The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office has continued to experience a decline in search and rescue missions for 2026 within the months of April and May. Missions were down 66.7% from 2025 in April and down 60% in May. The nature of missions in April both involved vehicles stuck in the snow, requiring rescue of the occupants due to location and other reported factors. May missions involved two ankle injuries; one on Falls Creek Falls trail and one on Dog Mountain. The month of May was closed out with simultaneous missions on Mount Saint Helens involving a subject with an injured ankle and another subject stuck on a rock cliff after going off trail.
As always, the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office is so grateful for the incredible search and rescue volunteers who selflessly serve our county mission after mission.

Deputy Forced to Shoot Aggressive Dog Following Failed Less-Lethal Attempt

On May 6th, 2026, a Skamania County Sheriff’s Office deputy was involved in an incident with an aggressive dog at his residence in Clark County, Washington, following the completion of his assigned shift.

Upon arriving home, Deputy Kioroglo observed an aggressive dog circling his marked patrol vehicle. As Deputy Kioroglo exited the vehicle, the dog aggressively charged toward him. Deputy Kioroglo initially attempted to stop the attack by deploying his department-issued Taser; however, the Taser deployment was ineffective and failed to stop the animal.

As the dog continued to present an imminent threat of serious injury, Deputy Kioroglo discharged his duty firearm, striking the dog.

The Clark County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and is conducting the investigation into the incident, as the event occurred within their jurisdiction.

Investigators are aware of multiple prior complaints involving this particular dog, including a previous dog bite incident that had been investigated by the Clark County Animal Control.

No persons were injured during the incident.

Additional information will be released by the investigating agency as it becomes available.
