📢AFC URGING CAUTION AGAINST WILDFIRES📢

With forecasts calling for elevated wind speeds and a dry front passage across the state, the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) strongly discourages any outdoor burning until conditions improve. The agency also points to dropping relative humidity and an increase in wind speed on Saturday as especially concerning.

With the anticipation of critical fire weather conditions, AFC is issuing a Fire Danger Advisory on Friday, March 27. The potential for critical fire weather elevates on Saturday, March 28, increasing the threat issued to a Fire Alert. By Sunday, March 29, the potential for critical fire weather decreases slightly, lowering the threat issued to a Fire Danger Advisory.

The combination of these conditions creates a greater-than-average potential for outdoor fires to escape easily and spread rapidly, taking longer – and more of the agency’s firefighting resources – to contain and ultimately control. Fast-moving wildfires not only destroy property and forests but also threaten the lives of citizens and endanger firefighters.

Prescribed burn permits will be limited to only Certified Prescribed Burn Managers on Friday. Permits for outdoor burning will not be issued to anyone on Saturday. The AFC plans to resume regular permit issuing on Sunday, March 29, provided improved weather conditions. Anyone who burns a field, grassland, or woodland without a burn permit may be subject to prosecution for committing a Class B misdemeanor.

In the last seven days, 147 wildfires have burned approximately 5,600 acres of forestland across the state. This includes a large wildfire in Wilcox County (963 acres), one for 464 acres in Montgomery County, one for 505 acres in Marengo, and four others over 200 acres in Choctaw, Covington, Etowah, and Walker counties.

The Alabama Forestry Commission is the state agency committed to protecting Alabama’s invaluable forest assets as well as its citizens. To report a wildfire, call (800) 392-5679. For more information on the current wildfire situation in the state or any other forestry-related issues, contact your local AFC office or visit the agency website.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Greg’s family and friends. Thank you for your many years of service.

Over the weekend, we received the difficult news that our friend and former colleague, Greg Pinkard, passed away.

Greg spent 10 years in the State Fire Marshal’s Office working cases in North Alabama, part of his stellar 30-year career in law enforcement. He retired from the SFMO in 2021.

We share in the deep loss felt by his family and hope you will keep them in your thoughts during the difficult days ahead.

We will never forget you, Greg.

Around 12:00 PM today, we received a mutual aid call from Tri-Community Fire Department Station 5. They had been dispatched to a barn on fire in Flat Rock. The barn contained hay rolls and equipment. We were able to provide man power and assist in maintaining a water supply.

⚠️ BLACK ICE PREPAREDNESS – JACKSON COUNTY ⚠️

As temperatures drop below freezing tonight and remain below freezing, the risk for black ice will increase significantly across Jackson County, especially after sunset and during overnight hours.

What to know:
• Black ice is hard to see and can form even when roads look dry
• Bridges, overpasses, shaded roads, and elevated surfaces freeze first
• Recent moisture + falling temperatures = hazardous driving conditions

What you should do NOW:
✔️ Avoid unnecessary travel after dark
✔️ Slow down and increase following distance
✔️ Watch for slick spots on bridges and rural roads
✔️ If you must travel, assume roads may be icy

⚠️ The National Weather Service highlights hazardous driving conditions due to black ice from this evening through Tuesday/Wednesday, with area-wide temperatures staying below freezing

📣 Have a road report? **Send when it is safe**
If you encounter icy roads or dangerous conditions, comment on this post or message Jackson County EMA.
We are continuing to monitor conditions closely and will provide updates as needed.

Yesterday was hard, but the hard days don’t win. We will continue to carry the torch you’ve carried for so long.

We appreciate all of the local departments that attended to help honor Asst. Chief Sartin. We are especially thankful for Corey Comstock and his guys at South Pittsburg Fire Dept. for covering our area and providing their ladder truck for the service. Thank you Elisha Nacoe Bryant with WoodmenLife for providing the flag we presented to the family. Working together always makes things easier, even during the hard times. Thank you all!
