Founded in 1986 and located in downtown Steubenville, Ohio, Historic Fort Steuben includes the reconstructed 18th century fort, Fort Steuben Park and Visitor Center, the First Federal Land Office and the Berkman Amphitheater. Historic Fort Steuben is part of the non-profit Old Fort Steuben Project (OFSP), organized in 1986 by community-minded citizens to reconstruct and promote the 18th century military fort and its place in state and American history. In the 30 years since then, the OFSP has transformed a blighted urban block into a city landmark with Historic Fort Steuben, the Fort Steuben Eastern Gateway Visitor Center, the First Federal Land Office, Fort Steuben Park, the Veterans Memorial Fountain and the Berkman Amphitheater. In 2019, over 40,000 people attended events or visited the site.

Patriot Day | September 11, 2001 • 25th Anniversary

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the countless families forever changed by that tragic day. As we mark the 25th Anniversary, we honor the victims in New York City, at the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93, whose courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

We also remember the brave first responders who ran toward danger to help others and the spirit of unity that carried our nation through unimaginable loss.

On this Patriot Day, we keep the victims, survivors, their loved ones, and all those affected by 9/11 in our thoughts and prayers. May we continue to honor their memory by embracing the values of courage, compassion, service, and resilience.

Twenty-five years later, we still remember. We still honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

🔥 1776 — INDEPENDENCE
The Declaration of Independence launches the United States as a new nation.

⚔️ 1783 — INDEPENDENCE SECURED
The Treaty of Paris ends the Revolutionary War and recognizes American independence.

🗺️ 1785 — THE WEST IS SURVEYED
Congress establishes a system for surveying the western lands through the Land Ordinance of 1785.

🏰 1786 — FORT STEUBEN RISES
The First American Regiment begins construction of Fort Steuben to protect federal surveyors mapping the Northwest Territory.

🌲 JULY 13, 1787 — NORTHWEST ORDINANCE
Congress adopts the Northwest Ordinance, establishing a government for the territory northwest of the Ohio River.

📜 SEPTEMBER 17, 1787 — CONSTITUTION DAY 🇺🇸
The Constitution is signed in Philadelphia, establishing the framework for the new federal government. September 17 is now Constitution Day.

🏕️ MAY 1787 — FORT STEUBEN IS EVACUATED
The fort's mission ends, and the military post is abandoned.

🏘️ 1797 — STEUBENVILLE IS FOUNDED
A community grows around the former fort site and becomes Steubenville, carrying the name of Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben.

⭐ 1803 — OHIO BECOMES THE 17TH STATE
The Northwest frontier becomes the state of Ohio.

In the same remarkable year that America created its constitutional framework, the Ohio frontier was being surveyed and organized under the Northwest Ordinance — with Fort Steuben standing on the frontier as part of that westward story.
