Happy Bird Day, Meggie! Born at 6:04 am, just 4 minutes after she quite literally kicked her brother out of the womb; she made her grand entrance feet first (and ready to run, LOL), and looked like a wise, little old woman at just 5lb 1 oz. Today she would have been 25.

When we first made eye contact, it was clear she was a wise, old, soul. Full of curiosity, energy, and s***k, she commanded your attention and loved fiercely, especially her brothers.

I am so grateful for the all to short time we had with her earthside. She died tragically and unexpectedly just weeks after her 3rd birthday when her dresser fell on her, just a week before Christmas.

Her legacy is in the lives she's saved through her story, but none of that soothes the pain of losing her. So today, please share the importance of anchoring furniture with drawers, doors, and shelves with your friends, family, and coworkers, and do something silly and fun to honor her memory.

Happy Heavenly birthday Meggie-Moo! I love you! Kiss. Hug. Snuggle. 🩷

🐡 Chester says: Never crawl under reclining chairs!

Recliners can look like tempting places for children to hide and explore, but moving footrests and reclining mechanisms can create serious hazards.

Parents and caregivers can help keep playtime safer by teaching children that the space underneath reclining furniture is always off limits. πŸ›‹

🐡 Chester says: Save your bed for snoozing!

Beds β€” especially bunk beds β€” are made for sleeping, not jumping. Active play on furniture can lead to falls and other injuries, so Chester is reminding families to save the big jumps and high-energy play for safer spaces. πŸ›

🐡 Chester says: Never play on glass-top tables!

Furniture Safety Week’s newest mascot is helping make important home safety messages easier for children and families to understand. Glass-top tables are not play surfaces, and climbing, jumping or playing on or around them can lead to serious injuries.

Manufacturers, importers and retailers can help extend the reach of these safety messages by directing consumers to trusted furniture safety resources and sharing them through their own websites and social channels.

🐡 Chester says: Save climbing for the monkey bars!

Children are natural explorers, but furniture with drawers, doors or shelves can be tempting places to climb. Anchoring furniture to the wall can help reduce the risk of tip-over accidents and create a safer space for kids to play and explore.

Furniture Safety Week Tip: Just because a dresser is lighter in weight or has a metal frame and/or fabric drawers does NOT mean it's safe. Unfortunately, there are many overseas companies making non-compliant and potentially dangerous dressers that consumers think are safe because they aren't heavy. They pose a risk of injury and entrapment and give consumers a false sense of safety.
When buying a new dresser, make sure it complies with ASTM F2057-23. Always anchor ALL furniture with drawers, doors, and shelves to the wall, no matter how light or heavy it is.

βš– In 2022, AHFA helped win passage of the STURDY Act, legislation that created mandatory furniture stability testing to reduce tip-over accidents involving clothing storage furniture.

Research conducted by AHFA earlier this year, however, reveals non-compliant chests and dressers are being sold every day on popular e-commerce sites. ⚠

This year, Furniture Safety Week turns the spotlight on how some overseas factories are bypassing the federal stability standard and selling non-compliant furniture directly to consumers.

Furniture Safety Week Tip of the Day: Recliners!
When using reclining furniture, ensure the legrest is closed when not being used, and always check for kids and pets before closing. If the recliner is electric or a lift-assist model, ensure kids and pets are clear from the back of the chair before lowering it from the higher lifted position.
Recliners can also tip-over backward, especially when the foot/leg rest is elevated and weight is put on the back/top of the chair. Positioning them close to a wall can help prevent the chair from tipping backward.
A special note about electric recliners. Depending on the length of the cord for a corded remote, the cord could also pose a strangulation hazard to a young child.
