Happy April Fool's Day!

Don' t be a fool and believe these misconceptions about one of our local creatures.

Harvestmen, commonly called Daddy Long Legs are NOT venomous NOR A SPIDER.

They are classified as Arachnida, which is the same as spiders, but are actually closely related to scorpions. They may be mistaken as spiders because of their close appearance to the Cellar Spider.

Here are some distinct differences between Harvestmen and Spiders:
-They have a one fused oval segment while spiders have two distinct body parts. They are adapted to have thicker bodies which helps them be more durable.
-They have one pair of eyes while spiders have 3-4 pairs of eyes.
-They do not spin silk or make webs while most spiders will.
-They are detritivores and scavengers while spiders are obligate predators that use their intricate webs, fangs, and venom to capture their prey.

Piece of the Puzzle

Final Update: The fallen trees along Old Vestals Gap Road and near the outdoor play area have been cleared. Both locations are open for use.

Updated: Old Vestals Gap Road between the Claude Moore Park Visitors Center and Pavilion #2 will remain temporarily closed to foot traffic due to a fallen tree.

Additionally, a portion of the outdoor play area is also temporarily closed.

Please avoid any blocked areas until the trees are safely removed.

The Loudoun County Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) is informing the community of an upcoming deer management effort at Claude Moore Park. This work will be carried out in coordination with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Wildlife Services. Public notice signage will be placed in the park in advance of the activity.

PRCS staff have been monitoring wildlife conditions at Claude Moore Park and have identified ongoing concerns about a deer population that has grown too large for the area. This issue affects the health of the park’s natural resources, has a negative impact to the health of the deer herd, and is a continuing public safety risk for drivers with repeated vehicle–deer collisions on roads next to the park, including Church Road, Cascades Parkway, and Potomac View Road.

To address these concerns, PRCS will conduct a controlled deer cull in partnership with USDA Wildlife Services. This operation is planned to take place, weather permitting, overnight during the second week of March, after the park has closed to the public. To maintain safety, the exact date and time of the deer management will not be shared in advance.

The work will be carried out only by trained USDA wildlife professionals following strict safety protocols. The park will remain open during normal daytime hours, and staff will be on-site to ensure that no public access occurs while the overnight culling is underway. PRCS last conducted a deer management effort at Claude Moore Park in 2011.

All deer taken during this USDA-managed operation will be processed and donated to the Hunters for the Hungry program. This program distributes venison to local families in need, providing a direct benefit to the community in addition to the safety and environmental benefits in the park.

Loudoun County government will be open Wednesday, January 28, 2026, but on unscheduled leave status, with employees granted unscheduled leave.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐝𝐨𝐮𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞

• All PRCS facilities will be open with regular operating hours, and programs will be run with reduced staff.

• Adult Day Centers will open at 9:00 a.m. No transportation service will be provided.

• Senior Centers will be open during normal operating hours; however, no home-delivered meals or transportation services will be provided.

• Participants should contact the facility or program staff to confirm which classes/activities will operate as scheduled and which are canceled.

As a reminder, with the closure of Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) on Wednesday, January 28, all PRCS-sponsored activities held at LCPS facilities are canceled. Please check with your registered leagues for further details regarding scheduled practices and other sports-related events.
